Energy policy, Iraq top Senate race debate between Harris and Nelson

Senate debate
Republican challenger U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris gestures debates Democrat U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson Monday in the Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center at Nova Southeastern University in Davie.

Harris, the former Florida secretary of state who gained the adoration of the Republican rank-and-file after overseeing the recount that put George W. Bush in the White House in 2000, is trying to unseat Nelson, a Democrat who has been in Florida politics for more than three decades and is seeking a second Senate term.

"What's the best chance we have to stabilize Iraq? It's that political solution, but you can't do it alone cowboy style,'' Nelson said.

Harris, on the other hand, twice used a Republican catchphrase that the United States can't "cut and run.''

On energy policy, Harris said the nation should drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, while Nelson supported alternative fuel sources.

Harris said the national refuge could provide the country with oil for 29 years.

"Alternative energy sources are not the only answer to our energy needs,'' Harris said.

Nelson said: "You can't drill your way out of the problem, so you have to go to the alternative sources.''

2. Nelson was poised, articulate and knowledgeable about the topics.

Harris on the other hand was what I expected.

A drama queen. Mouthed prepared lines as if reading from a script. Stammered and stuttered.

Nelson was generous in even showing up. Everyone but Krazy Katie herself knows she's a joke. How sad.

4. What a waste of time - I want my hour back.
The only thing that stood out was Harris - and only because she wouldn't stay behind her podium. What the heck was that all about? Wasn't that strange? Made her appear overly aggressive, defensive, and inexperienced.

Dumbest mistake-
Taunting Nelson with accepting the illegal Riscorp campaign contribution - Did she conveniently forget the more than $20,000 they illegally bundled for her campaign, too? It's been brought up so many times, she had to know that 'got ya!' was going nowhere.

As you mentioned, mouthing prepared lines - Iraq, 'cut and run' and 'defeat is not an option'. North Korea, 'put them on notice' and 'all options on the table'. Not saying anything, just throwing out words.

Best question-
Asking Senator Nelson about voting contrary to party lines, I think she said it was 25%? of the time. The man is no liberal, that's for sure.

Best answer-
Undoubtedly Nelson's major score with, "You can't drill your way out of the problem, so you have to go to the alternative sources."

All in all, a waste of time. Krazy Kat didn't melt down and Nelson didn't get struck with a Paul Wellstone stick.

Did you stick with it to the end? Harris dashed off the stage while Senator Nelson graciously shook hands and thanked everyone. Then she reappeared to do the same like someone backstage had shoved her back out there. That was truly weird.

8. Nelson is a conservative Democrat
but you should hear the ads Katie is running in Florida. "Bill Nelson, a tax and spend liberal" with an emphasis on the word "liberal" to make it sound like something dirty.

9. I noticed that.

I wondered if Krazy Katie was in a quiet rage knowing that she came off looking like the asshole all the rest of us know she is.

And I thought Nelson let her down very easily by not even mentioning how her own Florida GOP and her own Governor publicly stated their own desire to have anyone else run for Senator under the GOP banner. He might be saving that one for their last meet-up next week, assuming the poor lady's not institutionalized before then.

11. Now that you mention it,
he owned the debate, didn't he? He politely side-stepped and allowed her to slip on her own banana peels.

She came off as outclassed and totally out of her element. He came off as a gentleman and statesman.

Good catch! (I'm a little slower on the uptake.)

5. Why doesn't
the top half and the bottom half of her body match? Maybe it's just the awful outfit? What 50+ year old woman wears a pleated skirt? I haven't touched one since high school and that was only because I was forced to wear one then.

6. fashion statement!
Thank you for that. I'm a chicken and didn't want to take the heat, so didn't bring it up myself. But now that the topic has been broached...

Here's my take on her wardrobe choice:

Gets dressed,
looks in mirror,
decides skirt is entirely too short (keeping in mind one of the must do's for Kat was 'dress appropriately'),
pulls it down as far as possible without losing it,
realizes that won't work since now it rides too low
and her shirt won't tuck in,
frowns, pouts,
then has a 'brilliant' idea,
puts another identical skirt on over the first one,
does a couple of twirls in front of the mirror,
throws her reflection a kiss,
and it's out the door...

:D

school dress code - no pants - pleats - ugh - ironing pleated skirts - the worst - rolling the waistband to turn a knee length skirt into an improvised mini - defying authority - ah, memories - boy, am I getting old

7. Did you ever have a nun
unroll your waistband for you? I did once, I just about jumped out of my skin. It's okay sister, I can unroll my skirt myself. Really I can. Whew! That was scary.

10. No, but you just gave me shivers at the thought.
My youth was misspent in public schools, small town Iowa, mindset still firmly lodged in the 50's - in the late 60's.

We rolled our own. ;)
