78 U.S. Troops Killed In October In Iraq

WASHINGTON, Oct. 21, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(CBS/AP) As President Bush reviewed Iraq strategy on Saturday with top generals and administration officials, the U.S. military announced that three more Marines were killed in combat in Anbar province, bringing October's death toll for American forces to 78.

That makes October the deadliest month for the American military in Iraq this year, surpassing the previous high figure of 76 in April. The skyrocketing death figure meant October, with more than a week left, was on course to be the deadliest month for American service members in two years.

13. There was a Stripes letter about the ammo dump this week
It's a brief letter, so I'll post all of it.

...

Well done, FOB Falcon
On Oct. 10, Comics on Duty visited Forward Operating Base Falcon, Iraq, to perform our stand-up comedy show.

Shortly after our performance, a mortar attack set the ammunition dump ablaze and we spent the rest of the evening cringing as blast after blast rattled FOB Falcon.

As part of Comics on Duty, I would personally like to thank everyone at FOB Falcon for being totally prepared for the “unpreparable.” These fine soldiers who orchestrated the evacuation and movement of people like myself are the reason no one was injured. It was an amazing thing to witness, and it makes me proud to be an American when I get to work side by side with these great Americans.

Thank you, FOB Falcon, for a job well done.

2. we seem to be stuck on 78
I heard 78 yesterday, and that was before today's 3 in Anbar. Where I went to school, that would make it 81.

12. The link you provide does not support your claim of 300 killed.
In fact, it says no injuries were reported as of the next day.

9. I can't imagine how frustrating it must be
for the troops to be over there knowing what is happening all around them, or the ones who have to box up and flag the dead to watch these casualty counts. They KNOW the counts are underreported but are in no position to go against their commander in chief and report what is actually going on.

Imagine the helicopter pilots who transported out of Falcon Base those 300 bodies seeing these reports of only 70 dead this month! What happened to the rest of those brothers and sisters who gave their lives? Are they not worthy of note?

20. Your report of 300 deaths at Ammo Dump explosion IMHO
is totally bogus. Even this corrupt administration couldn't hide 300 U.S. casualties. You'd hear an outcry from families.

The military is smart enough to build their ammo dumps that they do not blow up the whole base. Not exactly the first time an ammo dump has been blown up either accidentally or via attack.

25. there was a measured release of casualty info in vietnam
If it was politically tolerable to announce 100KIA/week and there was a battle producing 300 KIA,then the following weeks announcement of casualties was bumped up a bit until your surplus KIAs were accounted for.Wait and see what the near future holds.

18. its worse than a failure
failure would have been acceptable. its a sham.

there is no evidence to indicate that any of the excuses given to-date for going there or for staying there have any validity whatsoever.

for all we know it is a roaring success, because whatever their REAL intent was, it is none of the things they have said. for all we know bush is trying to beat abnedawhasisname in starting the "end of days" two zealots trying to see who can bring about the end of the world first.

U.S. sees deadliest month of '06 in Iraq

By CHRISTOPHER BODEEN, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 49 minutes ago

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Five bicycle bombs and a hail of mortar shells ripped apart a market south of Baghdad on Saturday, killing 18 people in yet another sign that
Iraq's government and U.S. forces were struggling to contain sectarian violence. Three U.S. Marines also were killed, making October the deadliest month for American forces this year.

In Washington,President Bush met with his top military and security advisers to study new tactics to curb the staggering violence in Iraq, where more than 3 1/2 years of war have now taken more American lives — at least 2,791 — than the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center.

U.S. officials have blamed the skyrocketing violence on the holy month of Ramadan, which ends Sunday for Sunni Muslims, as well as the increased vulnerability of American forces during a major two-month security sweep in Baghdad and the approaching U.S. midterm election..........

At least 44 Iraqis were killed or found dead Saturday, keeping the month on pace to be the deadliest for Iraqis since April 2005, when The Associated Press began tracking the deaths. So far this month, at least 907 Iraqis have been killed in war-related violence, an average of 43 a day.......
