Homosexuality pamphlet pulled from church shelves
October 20, 2006

The Curé of Ars church in Merrick has removed copies of a glossy green pamphlet called "Homosexuality & Hope" after receiving complaints about the brochure's assertions that homosexuality was a disorder preventable with psychotherapy.

Homosexuality is considered "intrinsically disordered" in the Roman Catholic Church's catechism. The pamphlet lists possible causes of homosexuality in "at-risk children," including narcissism, alcoholic parents, and poor body image.

It also says, "Current clinical therapy shows that there is hope for prevention," and offers information on support groups and research.

Critics said the pamphlet's advice on therapy as a way to prevent homosexuality is not scientifically proven.

4. My lesbian daughter never has had a problem
with the church we go to in Kings Park. We don't go that often, but when we do, the pastor always comes up to her and greets her very warmly. He gave her first communion 20 years ago and still remembers her name (amazing). My daughter goes up to receive communion and nobody has ever said anything or refused her, even with her "butch" dress and rainbow pin. As she says, "I am who I am. If anybody doesn't like it, TOUGH."

I, on the other hand, stopped receiving when I was 16 years old and still in Catholic HS. Just my own silent protest which started with their stance on birth control, then abortion, and over the years, has extended to homosexuality.

Maybe I just need to find another church. Someday.
