Southwest Rises as New Political Battleground (new Dem hope)
Southwest Rises as New Political Battleground
The region's early nominating contests and changing demographics put Arizona and New Mexico on Democrats' radar for the presidency.

Not far from the boulevard named for Republican icon Barry Goldwater, state Democrats have staked new turf, opening their first storefront office in this well-moneyed town where they're outnumbered among voters nearly 3 to 1.

For Democrats, the humble office with donated furniture is a base camp for what they hope is a remaking of the state's political future. Rallying behind the first Democratic governor in Arizona since 1982 and other indications of party growth, they're crowding fundraisers and staging rallies in an effort to remake the political landscape in one of the nation's fastest-growing, most ethnically diverse states.

"It's all about resuscitating a Democratic Party that in Arizona has long been given up for dead," said Scottsdale party organizer Laura Roskind.

And a key to that effort is the state's early primary. Arizona Democrats — along with their New Mexico counterparts — this year pushed their nominating contests to the front of the political calendar.

1. If Dean is the Dem. nominee
then he should adopt a southwest and strategy. If we can win New mexico, clorado. Oklahoma , Arizona and Nevada, he will be the next elected of USA.

2. Dean is DOA
The only candidates that can win in the West are mavericks. Clark can win in the west, Dean cannot.

4. I too hope that Dems
come their senses and nominate Gen. Clark but the way things look now it is a long shot.

3. Interesting that LA Times
covers this story, but our Arizona Repukeic has headlines saying "No Favorite for Arizona Dems" and goes on to report negative reactions to several candidates from AZ citizens. It's sickening. Guess I'll just have to stop the subscription!

5. Welcome to DU, sexysenior!
Cancel that subscription to the Arizona Republic, or maybe just give their newsroom a call, expressing your opinion about their coverage --

6. Thanks for the welcome
I do call the newsroom to express my opinion, and in addition, my hubby and I write letters to the editor which occasionally get published, but at this point I really think the only thing to do is cancel the subscription. Won't do a thing to change their tactics, but at least I'll feel better. Did the same with the AARP membership!
