GOP to air ad warning of terror attacks

The Republican Party will begin airing a hard-hitting ad this weekend that warns of more cataclysmic terror attacks against the U.S. homeland.

The ad portrays Osama bin Laden and quotes his threats against America dating to February 1998. "These are the stakes," the ad concludes. "Vote November 7."

Brian Jones, a spokesman for the Republican National Committee, said the ad would run on national cable beginning Sunday, but he declined to discuss specifics of the buy.

The commercial tracks with Republican Party strategy to make the war on terrorism a central theme of this election. It will air as recent polls show Republicans losing ground as the party best able to combat terrorism.

(snip)

The ad displays an array of quotes from bin Laden and his top lieutenant, Ayman al-Zawahiri, that include bin Laden's Dec. 26, 2001 vow that "what is yet to come will be even greater."

1. This is soooooo going to backfire on them.
It's a desperate, transparent ploy that Americans won't buy into. Yes, there was a time that they would (and did!) but not any more.

Apparently they enjoy their husbands risking their lives for a lie. And of course the fundies see all this as part of the second coming of christ.

73. Maybe, but I've yet to come across one.
I'm on a couple pregnancy boards that are overrun with military wives. You can't even begin to suggest that the war is wrong, and you get your ass chewed up oneside and down the other. Several even have siggys about how their husbands are fighting for OUR freedom in Iraq. What does my freedom have to do with Iraq?

Seriously, I've been in many debates with these women, and particularly the ones on base must have kool-aid in their drinking water - because they're long gone on this subject.

34. Bullshit! The military community is far from monolithic
Especially in the Enlisted Family Housing areas, wives are NOT pleased with their husband's long deployments. Some families have to go on Food Stamps.

We don't support our ENLISTED troops.

But yes, the vast majority of the Field Grade (MAJ-LTC) and General Officers and families have a decent salary and are military "lifers" who fully support perpetual war. After all, these more senior officer will often not be close to the REAL action. :grr:

My husband and I are rare exceptions to those within the officer ranks. I like to tell my friends, I married the first attractive DEMOCRATIC fellow officer I could find. :P It's probably because we both come from working class roots.

At least the Enlisted Military community and some of the entry level Officers (LTs, CPTs) have a true mix of political views.

74. No, see my post above. Seriously
Most of these women are in their early to mid 20's, have several children, are all on public assistance. Yes they're sad that their DHs are gone for long periods, but from their discussions they truly believe they're fighting the good fight, and believe all the crap that bush says.

Edited on Fri Oct-20-06 06:36 PM by ShortnFiery
to know when they're being fed blatant lies. By the third time hubby gets rotated by to the Middle East, even these young wives' patience is ABSOLUTELY gone with regard to any trust of Dear Leader's Administration and policies. There are some hold overs, but I submit in the Junior Enlisted ranks and their families, the "gung ho" types are few and far between.

However, some in the Senior Enlisted Ranks as well as Field and General Officers and their families, most likely "lifers" are *true believers.*

Nope, I don't concur. Publically, these young women often don't speak out and let the wives of obnoxious senior enlisted and officers convey B.S., but secretly they want their husbands back home helping them look after the children.

The Junior Enlisted don't get paid enough to sustain a family in any basic QUALITY way. These women are overworked and exhausted. I submit they love their husbands enough to "dummy up" in front of the Master Sergeants' and Sergeant Majors' wives, but IF they felt their voice would count, they would be decidedly AGAINST this illegal and immoral invasion and occupation of a sovereign country.

I guess we just happen to disagree. That's cool. ;) :hi:

Oh, on edit, I live a short distance from Quantico Marine Corps Base where my husband retired from 20 years in the Intelligence Field. (Yes, Jar-heads are smart too! :P) I'm in contact with a few other field grade Officer's wives and yes, they drink the koolaid to the hilt.

However, as an Officer's Wife for 18 of the 20 years my husband served in the corps, I have always felt like I did not fit, so I didn't try - always being busy working when a social came around. The ONE responsibility that I did take seriously as an Officer's wife was to always be there for the enlisted families that needed guidance. Working with the senior enlisted wife/wives in his unit, I would often help the younger enlisted wives with financial planning and establishing a budget. The most flattering complement I have ever received is, "Gee, I would have never guessed that you were an officer's wife." Translation: You don't seem arrogant and self absorbed.

No, I don't presently interact with active duty junior enlisted family members but if they are like the ones I've had the pleasure to enjoy in the past, they are AWARE of their husbands' situations and do NOT approve of this continued occupation. ;)

69. Well, I am far from an expert on all things military, and
I'm a very vocal democrat, which has put me on the outs with some of the wives (especially those who try to wear their husband's rank- no big loss), but in the officer ranks I'd say it is not talked about in the terms you or I think in. Most of the wives I know are quite 'sensitive' to any perceived slight toward the military/mission, and often see things that just aren't there. There is an inability to separate the war/mission from the soldier from some, not all, of the military wives I deal with. Which, ironically is what we (liberals) are accused of doing. I've had my fair share of forwarded 'hate' email wrapped in an American flag. I respond with links to snopes.com and eventually most have stopped forwarding them to me. Seems they don't like facts messing with their opinions.

I would also add that the atmosphere is not conducive to open discussions about the war. Most families are in survival mode and we all have friends that have been killed. Some just cannot handle the thought that it was for a mistake so they turn their frustration toward those vocalizing their secret fears, which is why we are so polarized. It is a difficult time to swim against the tide, but that is what I do.

Thanks for asking.

and he sets the leaders at the Pentagon, FBI, etc, if I'm not mistaken? So any terror attack is his fault, not congressmen & women!

65. WHY would they flatter UBL in this manner???
IF the bushit and his admin were REALLY interested in defeating the terraists then why in the name of God would they flatter UBL et al with an ad like this?

This ad compliments the terraists by implying that they are a force to be reckoned with--what's up with that?

Wouldn't that translate into showing weakness on the part of the US government?

I would think it would...

If this admin can't deal with these random rag tag clowns with our so called *strongest military in the world* then what in the hell is the public paying for?

This is not only a desperate move on the part of the GOP it's a REALLY bad marketing concept and it's only going to annoy the public to be reminded that after 5 years they can't seem to capture these idiots lol

66. IMAGINE: A response commercial with drip drip drip of PDBs. Ohhh.
Start with the start of their commercial for two seconds, then have Condi remind us "who'd have thought they'd fly planes into buildings" then back to the * in Italy fearing planes into buildings, then the PDB, then Condi saying it's historical, then NOW WE LEARN the July meeting where she told them to brief Ashcroft. Finish with the end of their commercial.

THEY'S SLOW, TO LETS US KNOW. YOU GONNA TRUST 'EM, AG'IN?

67. Can't they be prosecuted for "insighting fear" under the p-act?
Edited on Fri Oct-20-06 09:31 AM by Rambis
I didn't think it was kosher to insight fear in the "merican" public. I asked a Federal judge about Cheney's statement..."if you elect Kerry we will be hit again etc etc etc" and the judge said you could make a convincing case that Cheney violated the Patriot Act with that statement.

Edited on Fri Oct-20-06 10:30 AM by SiouxJ
perfect opportunity to remind Americans that the US is so bogged down in Iraq that bin Laden is still running around free.

70. What a waste of their money
Glad to see them doing this! The ones that will respond to such an ad are already in their pocket, the ones who are on the fence are smarter than that and will see how pathetic this is.

Great move by the GOP, at least for us it is.:)

71. That ad is SO over the top, I think it will hurt them badly.
They are portraying a menacing Al-Qaeda. Not exactly proof of victory in the War on Terror.
