Carter says his peace efforts now on scrap heap

ATLANTA (AP) - Former President Jimmy Carter says his 1994 peace efforts regarding North Korea are now "in the wastebasket," because of actions by the Bush administration.

Carter criticized the administration for not agreeing to direct, bilateral talks and guaranteeing that the U.S. will not attack North Korea. Carter spoke at a panel discussion last night about his 1994 peace efforts.

But Carter says he does not foresee the current dispute over North Korea's test of a nuclear bomb leading to war.

Although North Korea has branded the current U.N. sanctions an act of war, Carter says they are not as stringent as those proposed by the Clinton administration before Carter brokered a deal.

1. Do you think the neocons and Bush deliberately sabbataged
...the 1994 Jimmy Carter Peace Efforts with North Korea because it had been brokered by Jimmy Carter? I believe that to be the primary reason with the secondary reason being BushCo's overall goal to promote perpetual global instability and war.

(CNN) -- Former President Jimmy Carter said Friday that flexibility between the United States and North Korea is the key to resolving the crisis over North Korea's nuclear program, a standoff that he called "the greatest threat in the world to regional and global peace."

The 2002 Nobel Peace Prize laureate said North Korea needs to agree to complete inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency and abandon any plans to become a nuclear power -- and the United States needs to make a "firm commitment" that it will not attack.

Carter, on a trip to Japan and China to promote the peace and health programs of his Atlanta-based Carter Center, said the matter warrants "the top priority in the international community at this time."

Carter accused the Bush administration of aggravating tensions between the United States and North Korea, which he called a "paranoid nation."

"The United States has refused direct talks, has branded North Korea as an axis of evil, has declared an end to no first use of atomic weapons, ... has invaded Iraq, and has been intercepting North Korean ships at sea, and has condemned the peace initiatives of Kim Young-sam of South Korea and President Clinton in the United States," he said.

2. New twist on old practice. Think to Egypt.
New king/dynasty would sometimes deface monuments/historical carvings of previous kings' exploits.

It is jealousy and hate in high places. Hasn't changed too much over the years. Ego over concern greater good, pure and simple.
