Note "warns" Calif. Hispanics on voting
More GOP voter suppression...

Note warns Calif. Hispanics on voting

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SANTA ANA, Calif. -- The state attorney general's office is investigating a letter received by some Southern California Hispanics that says it is a crime for immigrants to vote and tells them they could be jailed or deported if they go to the polls next month.

"It's a very malicious and degrading letter. It's to pull Latinos down and make them afraid," said Benny Diaz, who is running for City Council in Garden Grove. He said his wife and five other people he knows had received the letter.

The letter, written in Spanish, tells recipients: "You are advised that if your residence in this country is illegal or you are an immigrant, voting in a federal election is a crime that could result in jail time."

The truth is that immigrants who become naturalized citizens can legally register to vote.

3. That is a huge felony. I think they should take dna swabs from the envelop
envelopes and find out who sends these letters. In nevada, 2004 a dem district I was in had received pamphlets saying republicans vote nov2, dems nov3.

9. Similar
In the 2002 election in Maryland for governor something similar happened. The republican and they were cited for dirty tricks which could not be proved. In the mostly black democratic sections of Baltimore they posted flyers and sent out letters telling the people that due to machine manfunction the election would be held Wednesday instead of Tuesday. And they printed flyers and slipped them under the doors and posted them in the neighborhoods telling people not to show up to vote or they would be taken into custody if they had
1)unpaid parking tickers
2)behind in their rent
3)behind in their utility bills

They were warned they would be arrested immediately.

Then in Prince Georges County another black democratic stronghold, they altered pictures of Kathleen Kennedy Townsend had taken, where she posed with the black officials. They dubbed Townsend out of the picture and put Ehrlich in and said that the black officals were endorsing Ehrlich and they hoped that the black residents of Prince Georges County would also.

Then they went to DC and rented buses using homeless men to take people to the polls. But the busses never showed up at the destination.

So talk about scams the republicans are very very good at dirty tricks. And the two areas where democrats held an overwhelming majority the republicans took the total. Most democrats stayed home or voted for Ehrlich. They were all over the news the next few days saying they had been tricked into voting for Ehrlich.

10. Hm...maybe I'm missing something as I'm very tired...
It says *illegal* immigrants should be careful about voting as they could face penalties.

That doesn't contradict the last sentence in that "snip."

All I see is if you're illegal, don't vote. Um....that's the way it should be.

11. Read the first sentence
The state attorney general's office is investigating a letter received by some Southern California Hispanics that says it is a crime for immigrants to vote and tells them they could be jailed or deported if they go to the polls next month.

crime for immigrants to vote

That by itself is not true.

Illegal immigrants can't vote.
Legal immigrants sometimes can vote only if they are registered to vote.

12. ...

That first sentence seems like a journalistic summary because it goes on to *quote* that it's referring to illegal immigrants. And the letter itself is probably even more detailed.

I'm not defending it. I'm just saying without seeing the letter itself, there's nothing here to show anything false. There's no quote from the letter provided to show it referred to legal immigrants.

I read "or" as "and" in the later quote. My mistake.
