Foley's rehab paid for by taxpayers

The U.S. House of Representatives clerk's office says ex-Rep. Mark Foley's alcohol rehabilitation program is being paid for by a taxpayer funded medical plan.

Salley Collins, a spokeswoman for the clerk's office, said the Florida Republican is covered by a "temporary continuation of coverage" program that is available to federal employees who leave or resign their positions, Capitol Hill Blue reported Monday.

"Most, if not all (lawmakers), have some coverage as far as rehabilitation for drug and alcohol," Collins said.

Collins said she could not release specific details of Foley's medical plan, but Pete Sepp, vice president of communications for the National Taxpayers Union, said Foley's healthcare benefits will be available for 18 months under the plan.

8. There's a big retirement community down here
called the Villages. They've got the highest rate of STD's in the state.

9. I don't think we should object to the fact he is getting rehab.....
It's more of a question why everyone who needs help in this country can't..........

10. Exactly. Anyone who has struggled trying to find rehab for an
alcoholic (who has usually lost everything including insurance) knows how unfair this is.

paying for his rehab as well? disgusting, absolutely disgusting.

but then, we are still being gouged for nye's salary, forever, it seems. meanwhile, our vets don't have the care they need, our soldiers don't have the equipment they need, and 45 million of our people are without ANY kind of health insurance. oh yeah, this is wonderul.

6. No, I want my money back. This is public embezzlement of funds.
Congress has a VERY generous health insurance/disability plan. Let him use that.

of all benefits and pensions. They have betrayed the trust of The American People. Hell, they won't even raise the minimum wage while DEMANDING pay raises, benefits and pensions even when they become CONVICTs. It's not right and this should cease. :grr:

If Congress does NOT do the above, let's vote out ALL Democratic Incumbents who do not have the courage to their nug challenger at the very next Primary? http://voidnow.org

11. I don't have a problem with that.
I don't believe he has a drinking problem. Yet.

But his rehab costs should be paid for if that's what's available under the terms of his employment.

12. If it's pretend rehab he's not really interested in, and is using for a
hideout from news reporters, then this is a slap in the face to the taxpayers.

13. Good, his medical plan SHOULD cover this type of thing
Come on people, this is the Washington Times you should know better than to parrot what they are saying.

I believe ALL Americans should have access to these types of programs under a Universal Health Care system. The fact that Foley is getting treatment is a GOOD thing, just as it is good for anyone with serious problems to have access to treatment.

We need to ask why other people who need treatment are not able to get it, but we should absolutely NOT suggest that it is wrong for a persons medical plan to cover this type of thing whether they are a government employee or not.

14. Anyone who has insurance should get the treatment they're
covered for. Anyone! No exceptions because someone doesn't like the person.

Actually, everyone in this country should have insurance and get the treatment they need.

Everyone!

20. Unless they didn't really need the treatment in the first place
If he's an addict, then fine, I agree 100%.

If he's using his newly disclosed illness as a cover to find a place to hide, then, well, it's fraud and should be treated as such.

On second thought, that's the way it would work for you and me too. If we were defrauding our medical insurance company by making false claims, we'd be defrauding the company and could get in some serious hot water. So I guess all we are saying (you and I both, I think) is that he should be treated like any other person. Treat him for any legitimate illness or condition, of course, but not for any false medical claims made for alterior motives.

17. Yeah,
Of course it should, but all Americans don't have coverage like this. Hell, I was paying up the yin yang for coverage that didn't cover dental or eyeglasses... C'mon. It is a blatant double standard that these jackasses spend enough time legislating raises for themselves and drug rehab programs (C'mon, they're senators and congresspeople...). If my taxes are paying for his Health care in the extreme, than I want the same coverage paid for by my taxes as well. I'm sick and tired of my taxes going to destroy countries, murder people, and then pay the necrophiliac nepotists to build it back up again.

I'm so glad I got a foreign tax credit for working in Hong Kong last year. I have to admit it. I am glad most of my money didn't go to the US government last year. SO GLAD.

I will be proud to pay US taxes again when it goes to something PUBLIC again for the FSMsakes.

What part of Public doesn't this administration understand??? And Senators don't get off for "testing" the waters of the Universalized health plan because we all know that Foley and his a**h*** buddies weren't planning on fixing the health care system. I hope they all get horrible deformities that their awesome exclusive medical coverage can't cure. Except Bernie Sanders, and Conyers and Boxer and Waxman on their good days. I hope that isn't too harsh to say, but I'm pissed off, and no amount of apologetics are going to get me to say "Poor, Foley, he deserves drug rehab just like the rest of us!" Rush, and Foley, get to blame everyone else for their "Depravity" and then get a safety net and not go to jail or face repercussions? What a bunch of hypocrites!

18. Foley should have to...
Spend the rest of his life in a constant state of intervention on his gayness... That's the 25th plane of Dante's Inferno. He gets to go to Jesus camp and get reprogrammed as a straight man by Church ladies for all eternity.
