Foley's rehab paid for by taxpayers

The U.S. House of Representatives clerk's office says ex-Rep. Mark Foley's alcohol rehabilitation program is being paid for by a taxpayer funded medical plan.

Salley Collins, a spokeswoman for the clerk's office, said the Florida Republican is covered by a "temporary continuation of coverage" program that is available to federal employees who leave or resign their positions, Capitol Hill Blue reported Monday.

"Most, if not all (lawmakers), have some coverage as far as rehabilitation for drug and alcohol," Collins said.

Collins said she could not release specific details of Foley's medical plan, but Pete Sepp, vice president of communications for the National Taxpayers Union, said Foley's healthcare benefits will be available for 18 months under the plan.

Come on people, this is the Washington Times you should know better than to parrot what they are saying.

I believe ALL Americans should have access to these types of programs under a Universal Health Care system. The fact that Foley is getting treatment is a GOOD thing, just as it is good for anyone with serious problems to have access to treatment.

We need to ask why other people who need treatment are not able to get it, but we should absolutely NOT suggest that it is wrong for a persons medical plan to cover this type of thing whether they are a government employee or not.

If he's using his newly disclosed illness as a cover to find a place to hide, then, well, it's fraud and should be treated as such.

On second thought, that's the way it would work for you and me too. If we were defrauding our medical insurance company by making false claims, we'd be defrauding the company and could get in some serious hot water. So I guess all we are saying (you and I both, I think) is that he should be treated like any other person. Treat him for any legitimate illness or condition, of course, but not for any false medical claims made for alterior motives.

Of course it should, but all Americans don't have coverage like this. Hell, I was paying up the yin yang for coverage that didn't cover dental or eyeglasses... C'mon. If my taxes are paying for his Health care in the extreme, than I want the same coverage paid for by my taxes as well. I'm so glad I got a foreign tax credit for working in Hong Kong last year. I have to admit it. I am glad most of my money didn't go to the US government last year. SO GLAD.
