NAACP to Monitor Elections in 10 States
The NAACP said Monday that it will monitor voting in 10 states next month, sending observers to polling places, taking citizen complaints and notifying the Justice Department of any serious problems.

The states were chosen based on those with pivotal elections, states with concentrations of black voters, and those with a history of polling problems, according to the Baltimore-based civil rights organization.

President Bruce Gordon urged voters to persist in trying to cast ballots.

``While the NAACP will take steps to counter obstacles to voter participation, we are encouraging our communities to cast their votes, even if it requires extra effort,'' he said in a statement released before a news conference at the group's headquarters.

2. Everyone who can needs to help in this effort. If cheaters are
being watched, wouldn't they be less likely to be so blatant about it?

3. This will really piss of the "conservatives"
How dare an organization attempt to assist citizens to vote in elections in this country. "Conservatives" sure as hell don't "value" free and open elections.

11. Once again, California is off the radar. WTF is that about?
We should be on that list. They are saying that these races out here are close and we know that is complete and utter BS. Grrrrrrrr...

14. NAACP's mission is first to protect the Black vote. And they
have their hands full.

I have to do some homework and see if there are any Latino groups monitoring here.

But, I agree in general. We're off the radar.

18. Protecting the "black vote" is important in the Bay Area and
Southern California, yes? This is the second time that I've seen two different orgs leave us off the "states to watch for" list. What gives? Wasn't the Davis debacle (engineered by Enron) enough to prove they want this state with every fiber of their collective beings? Geesh...

in CA than they are in any of the listed states. Latino voters, not so much.

Alameda Co has AWESOME activists as does Los Angeles when it comes to this particular area. If they steal it here, it won't be by suppressing the Black vote. It will be by suppressing the Chicano vote and the student vote and the Democratic vote in general, unless I'm mistaken. Plus, whatever machine fraud they can pull without getting caught.

You know I'm with you on this one. I want to start a "CA Watch" thread in the ER and post to it every day because we are falling into a crack.

/oops

I know that in Monterey County/Santa Cruz Co. we've registered over 100,000 latinos in the past few months. Reported it on the local news a few weeks back.

Have you seen the new election forms? What do ya think?:bounce:

8. ACLU and other groups should team up with NAACP on this
and expand the project to several more states. As noted by another poster earlier in this thread, TN could use some watchful eyes at the polls this time around.

I mean there weren't any voting problems in 2002 or 2004.. just the florida debacle in '00.
