Group demands Iraq war crime investigation

TORONTO, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- The Toronto-based Veteran Organ Donors International is calling for an investigation into what it claims may be war crimes in Iraq.

In an open letter to the United Nations and the U.S. Congress, the group cites U.S. President Bush, who said that a recent Johns Hopkins report that claimed the Iraqi conflict had more than 650,000 Iraqi casualties is "not credible." The letter calls for the United Nations to form a war crimes commission to investigate the discrepancy between relief organization figures and U.S. figures.

Information gleaned from the Red Crescent and Arab League indicates 8,000 Iraqi children have been killed and another 13,000 have sustained lifelong injuries, the group said.

Also, the leukemia rate in Iraqi children has doubled over the past decade, which the group attributes to the depleted uranium ordinance by the U.S. military. Also, according to the letter, U.S. forces have been specifically instructed not to perform body counts of civilians.
