Sunni party leader warns of break-up of Iraq

Baghdad - The chairman of the second-largest Sunni party in Iraq said Sunday that the break-up of the country was inevitable if a Shiite plan for an autonomous region in the south was successful.

The comments made by Saleh al-Mutlaq of the Iraqi National Dialogue party in an interview with pan-Arab newspaper al-Sharq al- Awsat came as insurgent and sectarian violence killed five US soldiers and dozens of Iraqis.

'The plans for the implementation of federalism carries with it the germ of division, and serves only the interests of two (Kurdish) families in the north and one family in the south,' al-Mutlaq said.

Al-Mutlaq also criticized Iraq's National Assembly for concentrating on federalism instead of on fighting the instability that has cost the lives of hundreds of Iraqis.

1. Let's not forget the oil interests that support partition
They would gladly take the Kurdish oil while the rest of the country burns.

3. Iraq = artificial country put together by britain in the eary 1900's
so breaking it up may be only restoring it to the normal tribal boundaries, and Iraq is a tribal state, like the saudis, jordanians, etc.

let em break it up. US forces out and home now.

Of coure, this has been inevitable from the outset. The probable result is some sort of alliance of the Shiite south with Iran, unrest in the north as Turkish and Syrian Kurds seek to join with the former Iraqi Kurds into Kurdistan, and the Sunnis as odd man out. Well, thats pretty much the way the old cookie crumbles. We'd better start figuring out how to achieve decent relations with Iran, cause they are going to own the oil. If when we had gone in to topple the Baathists we had done that instead of trying to get them to play nice together, we might have actually made friends with teh Kurds and Shia, who might have been somewhat grateful for our lifting the yoke of oppression. We might have even gotten Iran to stay out. But we'd have had to have gone in with that purpose, as we did Kuwait. Then it was drive Iraqi's out of Kuwait. This could have been drive Sunni's out of Iraq. I'm not saying I'd have promoted that, or that it would have been moral; but at least it would have been a frickin goal.
