National Republicans haven't yet given up on former Rep. Mark Foley's district, recently spending $244,300 for television ads attacking Democratic hopeful Tim Mahoney.
The race for the 16th District quickly became one of the most watched in the country after Foley resigned late last month when his sexually explicit Internet communications with teenage boys were publicized. Foley was considered an easy winner for a seventh term, but he is now being investigated for possible criminal charges.
The Democratic newcomer has become a strong contender, partly because Foley's name will remain on the ballot and Democrats are hoping that voters will be disgusted by the scandal. State Rep. Joe Negron, who will get votes for Foley as his replacement, has just under five weeks to campaign.

"It looks like the bosses in Washington have sent $934,000 in tainted funds to prop up (House Speaker Dennis) Hastert's hand-picked attack dog," Mahoney campaign consultant Charles Halloran said of Negron. "We look forward to campaigning on issues that matter to Florida."
