Gunmen kill brother of Iraq vice president-police

BAGHDAD, Oct 9 (Reuters) - Gunmen in police uniforms killed the brother
of Iraq's Sunni Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi in northern Baghdad late
on Sunday, police and members of the Sunni Islamic Party said on Monday.

Amer al-Hashemi, a major general in the Iraqi army, was at home in Sulaikh
when gunmen stormed into the house and killed him.

"Gunmen in police uniforms and in 10 police cars arrested his bodyguards
and then entered his house and killed him," a police source said.

Tareq al-Hashemi's Iraqi Islamic Party is the largest in the main Sunni
political bloc in parliament and was the first Sunni Islamist party
to join the political process, which U.S. and Iraqi officials hope will
defuse the Sunni insurgency.

This is emblematic of the ineptitude that has characterized post-invasion Iraq. We generally have no concensus about what we need to do to supress the insurgency. But that's OK, because even if we really had some sort of plan, we lack the means to implement it.

Baghdad - The brother of Iraq's Sunni Arab vice president was assassinated in his home in one of series of attacks around Iraq on Monday, police and government spokesperson said.

General Amir al-Hashimi, the brother of vice president Tariq al-Hashimi and an adviser to the defence ministry, was killed by gunmen who entered his north Baghdad home wearing military uniforms, said al-Moussawi.

The general was the third member of the vice president's family to be murdered during the past 12 months. The vice president's sister and another brother were murdered earlier.

Insurgents have often targeted the families of prominent politicians in an apparent effort to intimidate the country's leaders.

...a few possibilities:

1). Nothing. No mention of it, nada.

2). "We will hunt down the folks responsible for this and bring them to justice. They can run, but they can't hide. We'll smoke 'em out of their caves. They're cowboys, on a steel horse they arrive. They're wanted (WAN-TED), dead or alive."

3). "The Democrats would give comfort and aid to those who committed this horrible crime"

4). "We have to fight the people who shot the Iraqi VP's brother over there so that we don't have to fight them over here."

Personally, I think it will be #1.
