Minor Quake Strikes Near Mount Rainier

SEATTLE -- A magnitude 4.5 earthquake rattled homes east of Mount Rainier on Saturday night, but no injuries or damage were immediately reported.

The quake struck just before 8 p.m. about 7 miles east of the mountain's summit, said Tom Yelin of the University of Washington Seismology Laboratory.

My wife and I were watching TV when I felt the house start to shimmy back and forth, very lightly. I asked my wife: "Did you feel that?"

I watched a TV program once that said everything between the mountain and the Sound is in real danger.

There are boulders in the area between MtTahoma and PugetSound, big boulders, even right east of SeaTac, think Ikea area, that washed down last time the mountain erupted.

Fast flowing cement with SUV size boulders and trees in it. Nasty.

Though they are all small. I'm not saying it indicates anything beyond that the little quakes yield little attention.

14. I am NOT looking forward to the next quake

There have been three or four in Seattle since I moved here 12 years ago, and we are due for another. The last one occured while I was at work, on the 10th floor of an 11 floor building. The swaying was intense. Now, I work on the 28th floor of a 33 story building. In an office with two glass walls. :scared:

It would be better for me if it happened in the evening or at night. But then I think of all the people living in high-rise condominiums and....

15. A few possibilities

If you have that many animals, presumably you have a house rather than a condo or an apartment. The easiest thing to do is to open the doors and let them scatter (assuming you have them tagged.)

A second option would be to have your garage set up as an earthquake shelter, with reinforced beams and either plastic windows or the kind of "shatter glass" used to make automobile windows. You can keep the bulk of your supplies there; if you keep the litter boxes and kennel in the garage, the critters will be used to calling it home and it shouldn't be difficult to evacuate if necessary.

When I lived in Seattle, the dump I worked at had periodic earthquke drills. We were supposed to jump under our desks when they gave the word. The "stuporvisors" jumped on anyone who didn't crawl under. As if we needed to practice. So one day a real quake starts rattling and swaying the building. The stupovisors stood at the floor to ceiling windows looking out. A Darwin possiblity passed.

About The New Madrid Fault

THE NEW MADRID FAULT SYSTEM EXTENDS 120 MILES SOUTHWARD from the area of Charleston, Missouri, and Cairo, Illinois, through New Madrid and Caruthersville, following Interstate 55 to Blytheville and on down to Marked Tree, Arkansas. It crosses five state lines and cuts across the Mississippi River in three places and the Ohio River in two places.

THE FAULT IS ACTIVE, AVERAGING MORE THAN 200 MEASURED EVENTS per YEAR (1.0 or more on the Richter scale), about 20 per month. Tremors large enough to be felt (2.5 - 3.0 on the Richter scale) are noted annually. Every 18 months the fault releases a shock of 4.0 or more, capable of local minor damage. The most recent registering 4.3 along the New Madrid Fault on Thanksgiving evening, 1996, which was felt by citizens in the states of Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee and Kentucky, Illinois and Mississippi. THE HIGHEST EARTHQUAKE RISK in the UNITED STATES outside the West Coast is along the New Madrid Fault. Damaging tremors are not as frequent as in California, but when they occur, the destruction covers over more than 20 times the area because of underlying geology.

For those of you keeping track at home, the 1906 quake was estimated at about a 7.8.

On edit: I don't mean they're had like, 8 pinner quakes, I mean they're had MONSTER quakes!

The Mississippi River flowed backwards, and church bells in BOSTON rang.

Here's a couple lists of the strongest quakes in the US. Note well that on the first list, California doesn't even make the top 10, and the quake that comes in at #12 is a very little known quake.

Also note well #2 on the list, which has a rough estimate of 9, making it 100 times more powerful than the 1989 quake in the Bay Area! 9:30 PM local time on January 26, 1700! Yeah baby yeah!!!!!!!

28. Oklahoma has 80-90 earthquakes a year

Most are so small they can't be felt.

The Meers Fault in S.W. Oklahoma registered a 3.9 quake a couple of years ago.

Plus we have quakes from the New Madrid Fault.

which is a large part of the reason we don't have a lot of magnitude 7's. The small quakes relieve a lot of the stress. Small quakes are good.
