Madagascar airport closed to stop politician's return
By Ed Harris

TOAMASINA, Madagascar (Reuters) - Madagascar closed an airport in the eastern town of Toamasina on Saturday to stop an exiled opposition leader from returning home before a deadline to register for a presidential election ...

"The airport is closed until the 7th of January 2007. It is (President Marc) Ravalomanana who gave the orders," said Adolphe Ramasy, a senator in the region, as a crowd of supporters who had gathered to wait for him dispersed.

Rajaonarivelo, who must register as a candidate by October 14, said from the neighbouring Indian Ocean island of Reunion that he would not give up and urged a general strike to protest against the country's lack of liberty ...

Earlier police with rifles, gas-masks and body armour used teargas on hundreds of opposition supporters awaiting the return of their exiled leader ...

1. "one of its poorest countries despite rich natural resources"
.
.
.

Why do I suspect Korprate interference from the USA?

Is there ANY country out of the over 120 nations that the USA has their toenails into that is better off because of the USA??

Hell, even after numerous decisions from the WTO about our lumber tariffs the USA still ripped us off for over a Billion dollars - no interest either . .

From the posted article:

" Madagascar, the world's fourth-largest island, is one of its poorest countries despite rich natural resources and a strategic location off the eastern coast of the African mainland.

Madagascar is the world's top producer of vanilla, a major tourist destination and a rich source of precious gems as well as a key exporter of textiles to the United States. Oil firms and large foreign mining companies also plan to start operations on the island.

4. Used to be the best thing for a country was for the US to defeat it
I believe that was the basic plot of The Mouse that Roared. Every other country would rape your resources and your women, and prod your men at gunpoint into aiding and abetting the rape of the land. But the US would actually funnel tons of money, rebuild homes, businesses, railways, bridges, highways, canals, seaports, airports, locks, seawalls, water lines, sewer lines, electrical lines, dams, power plants, etc.

Now, we've become "every other country".
