Walt Disney World cutting 125 jobs, outsourcing to contractors
Posted on Fri, Sep. 29, 2006
Associated Press
ORLANDO, Fla. - Walt Disney World plans to cut 125 cleaning jobs and outsource them to contractors, but union officials said they were not aware of the change.

Affected workers will be offered other jobs at comparable pay and hours, company spokeswoman Jacquee Polak said. The jobs include kitchen cleaning, carpet cleaning, roadway cleaning and deep cleaning work.

"We're continuing to look for new ways to streamline the operation and looking for more ways to be effective and efficient in running our business, and at the same time maintaining the high standards we have set for guest services and general operations," Polak said.

Most of the positions being cut have a base starting pay of $6.90 an hour, Disney's minimum wage. Many are on the overnight shift and include a $1-per-hour incentive pay.

1. I heard Halliburton will get the contract
to train Mickey and Goofy as supervisors. The new cleaning force will be the Star Wars Ewoks.

4. mickey, goofy and the rest of the gang will be appearing at
disney India. All you kiddies can see Mickey live...on close circuit TV.

In the future, disney world will be nothing but a room in florida full of TV's with "live" broadcast from 3rd world nations.

5. Interesting that the lowest level is where Disney thinks it can "streamline
That is such a fraction of their budget.

I think part of the issue is labor availability. There is a glut in Orlando of those sorts of jobs and the turnover is very high - especially at the $6.90 level. An employee doesn't have much to lose by blowing off a shift. There are lots of those jobs here. This sort of treatment hardly inspires company loyalty.

I see lots of companies here outsourcing this sort of work for this reason. They will let the contractors deal with those headaches of filling positions and managing turnover.

Disney is full of it when they promote the "Disney Quality" If they were really committed to quality they would provide the work environments that inspire workers to quality. Can't wait to see who gets that contract.

7. I'm betting those "contractors" are the state dept. of
prisons and they are going to outsource those jobs to convicts from minimum security facilities who either won't be paid or will get .50 an hour. They can sneak in these guys in orange jumpsuits in the dead of night to do the dirty work and no one will be the wiser.
