WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican campaign committees had a significant $18 million financial advantage on Democrats heading into the final months of the November 7 election battle for control of Congress.

The Republican National Committee and the Republican Senate and House campaign committees on Wednesday reported a combined $94 million in the bank at the end of August, compared to $76 million for their Democratic counterparts.

The campaign committees will use the money to help candidates in November's elections, when Democrats must pick up 15 seats in the House of Representatives and six in the Senate to reclaim control in each chamber.

The Republican advantage was fueled by the fund-raising dominance of the RNC, which had $39 million in the bank compared to $11 million for the Democratic National Committee.

1. Alternate headline: Dems closing fundraising gap with Repubs
The gap between funds on hand between Repubs and Dems has closed over the past year. Dems started the year with $38M less cash on hand than Repubs. As fortunes have turned over the past several months, that gap has closed by more than half, to just $18M. The trend is solidly in the Dems favor.

4. good fundraisers
The Repubs have a huge database of small donor names that they can milk for money. Quite frankly this is one of those things that (in the past) the Repubs did much better than the Dems. This is changing, but it will take the Dems time to catch up. But ever year you see them doing better.
