WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican campaign committees had a significant $18 million financial advantage on Democrats heading into the final months of the November 7 election battle for control of Congress.
The Republican National Committee and the Republican Senate and House campaign committees on Wednesday reported a combined $94 million in the bank at the end of August, compared to $76 million for their Democratic counterparts.
The campaign committees will use the money to help candidates in November's elections, when Democrats must pick up 15 seats in the House of Representatives and six in the Senate to reclaim control in each chamber.
The Republican advantage was fueled by the fund-raising dominance of the RNC, which had $39 million in the bank compared to $11 million for the Democratic National Committee.
