US urges others to follow Australian, Japanese sanctions on NKorea
The United States urged other nations to join Australia and Japan in slapping new sanctions on North Korea, but China rebuffed its bid to expand a diplomatic posse confronting Pyongyang.

The US allies earlier blacklisted companies and an individual for alleged links to weapons programs in North Korea, in line with a UN Security Council resolution passed in July after Pyongyang test-fired seven missiles in the Sea of Japan (East Sea).

But Beijing delivered a blow to the US strategy on the Stalinist state, saying it did not plan to attend 10-nation talks on North Korea's nuclear program this week in New York, and reiterated its opposition to sanctions against Pyongyang.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said the new sanctions would help "protect the Japanese and Australian financial systems from exploitation by WMD (weapons of mass destruction) and missile proliferators and their facilitators."
