Hanesbrands Will Close 3 Plants (2200 jobs gone)
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/fn/4184773.html
soon we will all be eating air

RALEIGH, N.C. — Clothing maker Hanesbrands Inc. said Wednesday it will close three North American plants and cut nearly 2,200 jobs as it continues to try to make the newly spun off company more profitable.

The company will close plants in Monclova, Mexico; Lumberton, N.C. and Marion, S.C. Products that had been made in Lumberton will be made in Central America. Production now done in Marion will move to an existing factory in Clarksville, Arkansas. Work done in Hanesbrand's Monclova plant, which employs about 1,700 workers, will move to the Caribbean.

The changes will eliminate a total of 2,185 jobs, about 4.4 percent of the company' its total work force of about 50,000 people.

The restructuring comes a week after the textile maker spun out of former parent company Sara Lee Corp., based in Chicago. That was also a part of efforts to make the two businesses leaner and more productive.

Hanesbrands, whose brands include Hanes, Champion, Playtex and Wonderbra, makes lingerie, underwear and other clothing for large retailers. The company employs people in 24 countries, including about 15,000 in the United States.

3. does no one but us "liberals" get it????
until the dumbasses (I'm being mean, sorry) who keep losing their jobs (who actually vote Republican) start waking up, we will drift further into financial ruin, and yes, risk eating AIR one day as you suggest.

"The company employs.. about 15,000 in the United States."

well, make that about 14,000.... :sarcasm:

of course the company will make an extra 2 million from the move to cheaper labor through all the transfering of jobs. I want only USA made underwear, does it say that on the package?

17. American Apparel is a union-busting company.
There are many union t-shirt companies that pay their workers a bargained wage. Look for them.

20. Frankly they don't employ enough Americans for me to care if they go under
Edited on Fri Sep-15-06 01:21 PM by w4rma
Only 15,000 Americans out of 50,000. It's fine with me if they go under and it's fine with me if any other MNC with a similar makeup goes under, also. Americans will always need underwear and another company will take their place, preferably a company that doesn't lobby to export American jobs or bust unions.

9. Gee... but the Economy is Doing Great...
for CEO's and the wealthy. Welcome to the new World economy... the haves and have nots.

Question:

What percentage of the World is poor?

Now, what percentage of the World is wealthy?

Now compare the two side-by-side....

I'd be concerned if I were wealthy and did nothing to help the poor.
