FORT BENNING, Ga. - In an embarrassing twist of the Guantánamo prison security scandal, military prosecutors may have mistakenly released secret materials in the lead up to a hearing for a Muslim Army chaplain accused of mishandling classified information. (snip)
(snip) The hearing was delayed from Tuesday until next week. Military officials said the potential mistake would not affect the case, but Yee's civilian defense lawyer said it should be dismissed.
''If they don't know that something they are releasing is classified, how's anyone else supposed to know?'' said Eugene Fidell, a Harvard trained lawyer and president of the nonprofit National Institute of Military Justice.
Prosecutors discovered Monday that a handwritten document by Yee released to lawyers in the case ''may have contained classified information inadvertently released to the defense,'' said Army Lt. Col. Bill Costello, a spokesman for the Southern Command in Miami who came here for the Yee case. (snip)
(snip) Fidell said the latest charges, as well as Monday's embarrassing document disclosure, ``is more hysteria. They're really all atwitter for no good reason.''(snip/...)
