South Africa may enrich uranium

Monday 28 August 2006, 16:22 Makka Time, 13:22 GMT

South Africa, which has backed Iran's right to enrich uranium, says it is considering processing its own uranium and envisages building up to six more nuclear reactors.

Buyelwa Sonjica, minerals and energy minister, said that any enrichment of uranium by South Africa would be pursued within international obligations.

South Africa has said it hopes to expand its economy by around six per cent in the future and would need new energy capacity to fuel the expansion of the continent's biggest economy.

Sonjica said: "I therefore believe that time has come for South Africa to conduct a cost-benefit analysis into the beneficiation of uranium. I will soon be making certain announcements in this regard."

1. Well, dangit, now I guess we have to invade them, too.
They don't have oil, but they have diamonds and platinum. Might as well go for it; how 'bout it, George?

4. South Africa had the bomb.
The program was dismantled as apartheid ended.

The idea that a majority black government might have the bomb terrified too many people. The weapons grade material, enough to make many bombs, was quietly exported.

5. Didn't Ukraine say they were going to enrich some too?

It would be so cool if like a whole bunch of countries said they were going to enrich some, but I don't think it will happen because you read about how our troops are already stretched too thin and there are not enough even to keep the countries we are occupying under clampdown all over, but to bomb they don't really need that many so not too many countries are going to want to take the chance, but it is still fun to imagine what if they did and we had to say well, we can't bomb all those countries so we will have to shut up.

6. So? It's South Africa. They have the bomb before.
And they are the one African country that seems to work. Good Military, fairly stable domestic situation, strong democracy close US/UK ties. (This is all relative of course.)
