Bush says confident economy is headed in right direction
http://www.marketwatch.com/News/Story/Story.aspx?guid=%7BAB1AA6EE%2D6EEB%2D406E%2D9A0E%2D69DF33408A82%7D&dist=newsfinder&symbol=&siteid=mktw

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- The U.S. economy is headed in the right direction, President Bush said Friday, and and his economic team remains confident about the outlook. "The economy grew at a 4% annual rate in the first half of 2006. This means our economy is maintaining solid growth and performing in line with expectations," Bush said after a two-day closed-door meeting with his top economic advisers at Camp David. Economists say the economy is clearly slowing, as consumers have cut back spending due to weakness in the housing market and high energy prices. But growth hasn't slowed yet to the point where it has become the major political issue. Bush's remarks echo earlier comments by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, who has argued that the economy is simply slowing to a more sustainable growth path and is not in danger of recession.

1. direction: into Thomas Crapper's fine invention
(the toilet)

That creep and his puppet masters are batshit crazy. There are no walls high enough or gates strong enough to protect them when the revolution comes.

8. maybe to Dimson heading into the toilet is the right direction?
here's a weekly round-up of economic indicators:

http://today.reuters.com/misc/PrinterFriendlyPopup.aspx?type=smallBusinessNews&storyID=2006-08-18T115044Z_01_N17343123_RTRUKOC_0_US-INC-ROUNDUP0817-INC1155827976616.xml

(Inc.com) - Prices for both consumers and manufacturers kept climbing in July, amid further signs that the economy would continue to slow down in the months ahead. Here's a look at this week's economic developments and how they may impact your business.

Prices rising

After months of sharper increases, core consumer prices rose modestly in July, the Labor Department reported on Wednesday.

Consumer prices, excluding food and energy costs, rose 0.2 percent in July, following a run of 0.3 percent increases over the previous four months, the report said.

Still, overall consumer prices kept climbing in July, by 0.4 percent, with higher prices for housing, transportation, and recreation, the report said. In the 12 months ending in July, consumer prices have soared by 4.1 percent.

<snip>

Driven by higher energy costs, producer prices rose 0.1 percent in July, following gains of 0.5 percent in June and 0.2 percent in May, the report said.

Leading indicators down

In another sign the economy may be trending downward, the index of U.S. leading indicators fell 0.1 percent in July after an upswing of 0.1 percent the previous month, the Conference Board reported on Thursday.

Five of 10 components of the index -- a gauge of the economic outlook over the next few months -- were in decline in July, including building permits, weekly jobless claims, interest-rate spread, manufacturers' new orders, and the real money supply, the New York-based private research group said.

3. Sure, you can have a great economy, especially when:
- People are taking out second mortgages to pay bills.

- Credit cards are getting maxxed out.

- Our government keeps two sets of books, one real one, and one to make things look better than they are.

- You change the way unemployment numbers are figured, and when significant numbers of people just stop looking for jobs, because there aren't any out there.

- Money is being printed by the Treasury as fast as possible.

There are lots of ways to have a great economy on paper. But ask the people you meet on the street how good things are. That is where the REAL PERCEPTION of the economy lies, and many will tell you things aren't so great right now.

NOTE: It's probably best not to poll people about the economy on Fifth Avenue, Rodeo Drive, Worth Avenue, etc., because that is not a typical sampling of Americans, it's Bush's base.

It is going in presisely the direction that he wants it to. I have said for years that he wants to bankrupt the country so he can privatize everything.

30. When Bush says right, he means political leanings
Not going in the correct direction which is left. This economy is supporting the have and the have mores, or his base. That would be the political right direction.

12. Stone Soup All Around!
What confident economy is he talking about? The one THEY have or the one we don't ? As I brush up on 100 ways to cook dried beans and scour the internet for the best deal to pay for my meds this idiot seems to think we are living in some kind of fantasy world. His may be--mine is closer to a nightmare of watching every penny, being careful to use our vehicle only a couple times week and wondering when we will ever get anyone in office, again, that cares for the plight of the little guy.

20. "Bush ... confident economy is headed in right direction"
Downward is the right direction? Who knew?

The economy is headed in the right direction even though jobs are hard to find, just like in the 1st Great Depression?

The economy is headed in the right direction, even though what few jobs available are part-time or contract jobs, or full-time jobs w/o any healthcare offered?

27. I'm thinking by the time * leaves office.
We'll have 80+% unemployment.

Of course the media will report that there no longer is an official unemployment rate...but no one has a job.

I'm thinking the only people who will have work will be law enforcement b/c they'll have to be dealing with the soaring crime rate due to all the unemployment.
