On eve of Janklow trial, victim's hometown is watching

In the months since, those closest to Scott say they are frustrated by Janklow's decision to fight the charges.

They're haunted, too, by his driving record. Twelve times in the early 1990s Janklow was cited for speeding, including once when he was ticketed for going more than 90 in a 65 zone. There's also testimony from a woman who says Janklow ran the same intersection at high speed last December, nearly colliding with a truck carrying her family to a Christmas dinner.

"He was playing Russian roulette, and Randy got the bullet," said Jodi Christy, manager of a Luverne tavern once owned by Scott. "Even without his past, the bottom line is, we know he was going 71 miles per hour through the stop sign."

Christy and others are angry, too, that Janklow failed to remember Scott's name when he first spoke publicly about the accident at a news conference several weeks later. Janklow, who expressed deep sorrow and regret for what happened, referred to Scott as "Robertson" several times. Janklow explained the gaffe by saying that a head injury suffered in the accident affected his short-term memory

4. which is why it's being ignored
why our trial-obsessed cable news has virtually nothing about this case, while they cover every twist and turns in all those other cases.

Just that article I posted has plenty for Dan Abrams, etc. to dissect, but they ignore it.

Janklow even tried a version of the "Twinkie defense", this trial should be right up their alley.

2. I hope they can gain enough community outrage...
to balance the political tide...Only then, do they have any chance of holding him accountable. Anyone wanting to know how much this bastard has gotten away with (including rape, and quite possibly the victims's later murder) should do a quick google search. It's all there.

3. I don't care how
poor your short term memory is, I think a person would have a hard time forgetting the name of a man you killed in cold blood like that. Janklow makes my skin crawl, he is so slimey.

5. I didn't hit the link on this
the Minneapolis Star Tribune ran a similar - maybe the same - article on its front page today.

Janklow's excuse for getting the victim's name wrong is blamed on his short term memory and the fact he always got actors Cliff Robertson and Randolph Scott mixed up. PUH-leese.

6. He'll get off easy
A fine and community service. No remorse needed. I hope South Dakotans remember this come election time.

South Dakota congressman Janklow heads to trial in traffic accident death

Associated Press

FLANDREAU, S.D. -- Bill Janklow, a former four-term South Dakota governor and the state's only congressman, returns to his boyhood hometown Monday to face a trial that may decide his political future.

The 64-year-old is charged with speeding, running a stop sign, reckless driving and manslaughter in an Aug. 16 accident that killed a motorcyclist at a rural intersection in South Dakota.

If convicted of manslaughter, he could face up to 10 years in prison, as well as a House ethics committee investigation.

Under the committee's rules, any representative convicted of a crime that carries two or more years in prison should refrain from voting in the chamber until his or her record is cleared, or until re-elected.

Democrats are in a good position to gain from the trial, expected to last about a week, said Larry J. Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics. Democrat Stephanie Herseth, who lost her bid for Congress to Janklow last year, already has said she will run for the U.S. House seat again. (snip/...)

9. His lawyer is claiming he had a "Diabetic Reaction"
WTF is THAT????
I've been a diabetic for 5 years, and the only "reaction" I get is hypoglycemia, and that's the "ooh, I'd better pull over..." feeling, NOT the "Ooooh, I'd better put the pedal to the metal and fuck the stop signs" feeling....

Janklow's lawyer does us diabetics a HUGE disservice trying to get his slimeball lieing client off the hook...

What d'ya expect? He a ReTHUGlican....
