Canada wins softwood anti-dumping appeal
VANCOUVER -- Canada has won another round in the legal wrangling over U.S. softwood lumber duties, this time before the World Trade Organization.

A WTO appeal panel released a decision Tuesday overturning an earlier ruling that upheld the U.S. Commerce Department's right to use a method called zeroing in determining anti-dumping duties levied on Canadian lumber imports.

Canada argued the U.S. use of zeroing artificially inflated anti-dumping rates by tossing out transactions that showed Canadian lumber selling above domestic prices.

Canada won its argument initially but the WTO sided with the Americans in an appeal last May. Now the world body has reversed itself again and ruled the practice of zeroing is inconsistent with U.S. obligations under WTO agreements.

2. Groan...
"The American lumber industry, which crowed when the WTO upheld the U.S. position in May, dismissed the impact of Tuesday's ruling."

No shit?!

9. Wasn't that supposed to be decided today?
I thought forestry companies, etc. were to be on board by now if this thing was to go through.

5. Free and fair trade with Canada
Free and fair trade with Canada is good for both states. If every Country had the labor and environmental laws that Canada does NAFTA would not offend anyone. Trade with Canada should be one of the few things that both the left and right agree upon.

This is just another example neocon special interest politics.

6. It COULD be good for both, if the US
hadn't been evading trade obligations since the start. This didn't just start with the bush administration, unfortunately.

However, trade between the US and Canada is generally less offensive and blatantly weighted in one parties favour, because we're pretty close to social and economic equals. But, that can't be said for most of the world.
