Duncan Smith seeks recall of Parliament to set up tribunal

The Conservative leader, Iain Duncan Smith, yesterday urged Tony Blair to recall Parliament so that a tribunal could be established to investigate the way the Government handled intelligence on Iraq.

As the Prime Minister announced an independent review by a senior judge into the death of the civil servant Dr David Kelly, Mr Duncan Smith wrote to Mr Blair to demand a full and detailed look at the way the intelligence was treated.

He should have known better. He governs like a conservative anyway. Labour can put up anybody, even a weak, noncharismatic PM; maybe they will win. It would be a shame to lose someone from the left who followed Bill Clinton into power, but so be it.

3. I'm actually starting to think we have it better here

The British who want answers, and to get rid of Blair, for the most part have to side with the Tories. The Tories will probably make huge gains in the next elections, unfortunatly for the Brits. At least here in the states this is the "All Republican Show". They control all branches of gov't, so they are the ones who will lose big in the next elections--unless things get so bad there is actually an impeachment in which case we will find Democrats in control of all branches of gov't before it's all over.

6. In the parliamentary system...

the party can change the leader without the govt going down to defeat. Hopefully the British people will look at the revolt against Blair by labour MPs and if Labour is smart they will turf Blair and elect Cook or someone like him. If they do that soon then they can build up their support base again before a general election.

There are many more Tory/Liberal Democrat marginal seats than Lib Dem/Labour ones, so it is not necessarily good news for the Tories.

8. Thanks Spazito and w4rma--good news!

Good to hear the Liberal Dems are making some inroads. I had also heard before that Labor could throw Blair overboard and still retain their majority, but at the time this was considered highly unlikely (before the war). Now that this war is turned into a huge mess, maybe Labor will toss him. I foresee a huge govermental "house cleaning" coming to pass here in the States, in Britian and in Austrailia--get out your Hoovers!

The Bush administration has agreed not to go ahead and try 2 British citizens in a military tribunal. There has been widespread outrage in Great Britian over the fact that the suspects were not likely to be afforded an opportunity to defend themselves properly. My cynical calculation here is that Bush understands that Blair is now VERY vulnerable, and he needs all the help he can get. If Blair goes down, guess who's next?
