US Democrats see more unity on Iraq ahead of vote

WASHINGTON, Aug 4 (Reuters) - After struggling for months to patch over differences on Iraq, U.S. Democrats now say they are more unified than ever and feel confident they can convert public discontent with the war into votes later this year.

...

New York Democratic senator and potential 2008 presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton confronted Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld with a list of "strategic blunders" she said had led to the crisis in Iraq and later called for his resignation.

"I think people want change in Iraq," said New York Sen. Charles Schumer who heads the effort to get Democrats elected to the Senate. "The Democratic Party is united in terms of that change ... and we're feeling good about it."

3. Hagel is publically for withdrawing now and I'd bet a few scared GOP
senate candidates might be ready to bolt.

4. Yep, they ought to do something other than lip service and empty
promises. Otherwise they look no different than the Repubs (strategically). Just fire up that base with an issue to assure votes - all the while having no intention of actually doing anything.

Put it back out there! We just had 2 generals and Rummy admit Iraq is sliding into civil war. Best to have a plan to get out troops home, the sooner the better.
