Yesterday, Denmark and Finland, who provide 22 of the 57 peacekeeping monitors in Sri Lanka, said they were withdrawing their observers as the peacekeepers’ security could no longer be guaranteed.
Norway, Sweden and Iceland, the other countries who have sent peacekeeping monitors, said they could not fill the posts left empty without international assistance.
The EU placed the Tamil Tigers on a list of international terrorist groups earlier this year, prompting the group to declare the monitors as potential targets and demanding that the observers from Sweden, Finland and Denmark leave the country by September 1 ...
