Idi Amin in Coma in Saudi Arabia

(AP) - Idi Amin Dada, the former Ugandan president and one of Africa's most notorious dictators, is in a coma and critical condition in a Saudi Arabian hospital, medical staff at the hospital said Sunday. Amin, 80, was admitted to the King Faisal Specialist Hospital in the Red Sea port city of Jiddah on Friday, staff members said on condition of anonymity.

I thought we had a no tolerance policy of harboring terrorists. Why wasn't Saudi Arabia bombed?

Unlike the hundreds of thousands of Ugandans he and his thugs tortured to death. Apparently Saudi Arabia welcomed him with open arms after the Ugandans were finally able to eject him from their country. The fact that this guy was allowed to live out his years in comfortable exile is an injustice of such incredible magnitude!

For those unfamiliar with his antics as dictator of Uganda, I'd suggest reading the (hard to fiind) book State of Blood by Henry Kyemba, Amin's former secretary turned whistle blower. Incredible inside story of how this illiterate soldier rose up and destroyed a nation through his combination of personal charm and an absolutely nauseating capacity for extreme brutality.

8. My former neighbor!

I spent a couple of years working in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Idi Amin's huge gated compound was pretty close to where I lived. You could always see security guards with automatic weapons wandering around the place.

Once I saw Idi himself at the Jeddah Marriott, though it was just a glimpse through his security detail. He liked to pig out on their Friday buffet. (The equivalent of a Sunday brunch in Muslim countries.)

While I was there, a story made the papers about Amin running up a $70,000 phone bill one month. That led the Saudi government to cut off his phone service.

One of my college professors was from Uganda, and grew up there during the rule of Amin. The stories he told us in class sent shivers down my back. The sooner that bastard is dead, the better. Its only a shame he gets to go peacefully in a hospital bed rather than at the hands of the survivors of his rule.

In the morning of August 5th, 1972 Idi Amin had a dream in which he claimed God told him to expel the Indian/Asian community of Uganda. On August 9th, he gave the Indian community (around 40,000) 90 days to leave the country. When they refused, Amin's forces went on a widespread campaign of genocide.

As the years went on, Amin's eccentricities slowly descended into childlike madness. He began wearing so many medals his shirts would often tear from the weight. As his ego swelled, he granted himself a series of increasingly grand titles, including president for life, "Conqueror of the British Empire," and even "King of Scotland."
