Sheehan buys land in Crawford with son's insurance money

CRAWFORD, Texas – As President Bush prepares to spend some vacation time at his ranch here, not all is peaceful within the peace movement that has doggedly criticized his war policies for the past year.

The Gold Star Families for Peace says on its Web site that its members will again flock to Crawford in August to protest Bush's wartime decisions. Leader Cindy Sheehan is again demanding to meet with the president -- a replay of a year ago -- garnering worldwide attention and making Sheehan, the mother of a fallen soldier, the most familiar face of anti-war protesters.

But Sheehan and Mark Mattlage, owner of the 1-acre property where protesters have been allowed to gather, have had a falling out over scheduling and increased costs for liability insurance.

So, Sheehan has purchased a 5-acre plot in Crawford, saying she did so with some of the insurance money she received after her son, Casey Sheehan, was killed in Iraq.

"We decided to buy property in Crawford to use until George's resignation or impeachment, which we all hope is soon for the sake of the world," Sheehan said in a newsletter, scheduled to be sent to her supporters today. "I can't think of a better way to use Casey's insurance money than for peace, and I am sure that Casey approves."

44. It's not as big as you may think it is
but it should be adequate for her protests, unless they get too big. A couple of hundred people, maybe camping, no problem. Much more than that, and it's way too small.

But I admire her chutzpah. Go Cindy!!

43. He won't be there the rest of his life. The "Crawford White House"
is just for show for the duration of his pResidency. It is common knowledge in certain circles (rethuglican circles) in North Texas that the pResident and Mrs. pResident will probably retire in North Texas, presumably Highland Park with the rest of the filthy rich Texas white-boy oil mafia. After all, he has been their boy, bought and paid for.

55. My flash of insight was just
that when I was in Crawford last August. The pig farm goes on the market Jan 21, 2009. The pig farm is in the middle of NO WHERE on skimpy lane 'n 1/2, barely paved county roads. It is so clear saurove said 'find me a ranch for the campaign' and this is what was found! I'd be willing to bet GWB(God's Worst Blunder) didn't use his money 2 buy it! Those lifelong crawford residents, who are so proud/delighted/protective of the shiny turd go back 2 being lifelong crawford residents in the middle of no where texas on 1/21/09. AND they will still be proud/delighted/protective w/ no indignation at being used as backdrops for the wannabe dictator.

59. Anyone notice how horribly incorrect
the first paragraph of this story is?

CRAWFORD, Texas – As President Bush prepares to spend some vacation time at his ranch here, not all is peaceful within the peace movement that has doggedly criticized his war policies for the past year.

Then further down in the story it says Mattlage was not opposed to the war, and describes his relationship with Sheehan as a business relationship.

Sounds like this guy was somewhat sympathetic with the Gold Star Families, but he wasn't a member, and he doesn't sound like a member of the peace movement either, since he's not against the war.

This is either blatant bias or bad writing. Either way it's shitty journalism.
