Russia Concerned About U.S. Developing Low-Yield Nuclear Weapons
http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGAGKLEGHND.html

MOSCOW (AP) - A senior Russian military official voiced strong concern Wednesday about U.S. plans to develop low-yield nuclear weapons, saying that Moscow might be forced to review its own nuclear doctrine.

Col.-Gen. Yuri Baluyevsky, the first deputy chief of staff of the Russian General Staff, told reporters that the Pentagon's plans to develop such weapons would be destabilizing.

"We are witnessing that nuclear weapons, which have served as a political deterrent, are being transformed into a battlefield instrument," Baluyevsky said. "It's very scary, extremely scary."

A defense bill signed by President Bush on Monday lifts a decade-old ban on research into low-yield nuclear weapons and authorizes $15 million for continued research into a powerful nuclear weapon capable of destroying deep underground bunkers.

"That causes us concern," Baluyevsky said. "Should we somehow review our nuclear strategy? Yes, I believe we should."

1. I guess Bush misses the Cold War...
Having grown up during the "Duck and Cover" years and feeling genuine fear during the Cuban Missile Conflict, this new push on Nukes scares the hell out of me.

The hawks are out of control.

2. Any run-of-the-mill moron could see this one coming.
Oh, excuse me. We have an exceptional moron.

We finally have a chief executive with God's ok for nuclear weapons.

5. I fear it is too late for anyone to try to stop what W set into motion.
Another nuclear arms race with a lot of new players on the field as well.

7. Russia will probably field some of their nukes in conservation
And that is some 200 SS-18 "Satan", the same ukrainian-made rockets that participate in SeaLaunch space missions.

This is a road to nowhere. More nukes in the world means more insecurity, but that's missed the brain of W. (or whatever he has left there) while he was in college.

8. "Developing"?? Try using the word "developed"...
...IMHO, the legislation is a smokescreen. I think we've had these weapons on the books for several years. I also think we've already used them in Afghanistan and Iraq.

10. "Low-Yield Nuclear Weapons" - - a misnomer if I ever saw one !

. . . There is nothing "low-yield" about ANY nuclear weapons in my opinion

. . some are just less than others

. . I'm afraid the "low-yield" term may be bought by the sheeples as "ok"

(sigh)

and I agree with the DUer who believes these things already exist, or at least ongoing research.
