Donald Rumsfeld, the US defence secretary, stepped up his attacks on al-Jazeera and al-Arabiyah yesterday, saying the Arabic television news channels co-operated with Iraqi insurgents to witness attacks on US troops.
"They've called al-Jazeera to come and watch them do it, and al-Arabiyah. 'Come and see us, here's what we're going to do'," Mr Rumsfeld said at a Pentagon news briefing. He added he had "seen scraps of information over a sustained period" supporting the claim.
"I opined accurately that from time to time each of those stations have found themselves in very close proximity to things that were happening against coalition forces before the event happened and during the event."
