4. Journalists are somehow better that regular people
and should rate special mention in the news. Is that like professoinal courtesy amonmg lawyers.

A journalist who accepts an assignment in an active war zone is essentially a news mercenary. They are being paid for the risk. While it is unfortunate they this one was killed they deserve no more special treatment and coverage than anyone else.

10. Not at all, but I don't think that a freelance journalist should get any
more from the M$M than the mother killed in her basement hiding from the artillery. However, every trade caters to their own, and the media is no better.

Journalists are not a protected class, they are not better than the rest of us mere mortals. They are actually more dangerous than many since they decide what gets distributed and have their own agendas. There are no external checks and balances on them at a low level (Blair...), and the few at a higher level are disappearing (Murdoch anyone?).

If you think real journalists are in it for the money, consider most would do better their first year teaching junior high school in New Mexico.

And I think they, the real ones, do deserve special treatment. If it wasn't for them, you wouldn't know what's going on. The good ones are doing it to serve the public good.

When one is killed, the rest are chilled. That's important to know is happening, and thus a good news story.

12. There was a short news items about the number
of Journalists killed or injured in Lebanon -- this was in the very early days of this war.

Several International Journalist organizations are tracking press freedom, harassment and attacks while covering wars.

A google search comes up with the following:

http://www.newssafety.com/hotspots/countries/lebanonx.htm This is an "old" report -- a few more journalists have been killed and/or kidnapped.

Voicing concern about attacks on journalists in Lebanon in the past 48 hours and the lack of resources being deployed to protect them, Reporters Without Borders today called on the Israeli authorities to investigate the circumstances in which three journalists with the Lebanese television station New TV were injured yesterday.

Reporter Bassel Al-Aridi, cameraman Abd Khayyat and assistant cameraman Ziad Sarwan were injured when their vehicle was hit by shots fired from an Israeli helicopter as they crossed a bridge in the south of the country, where they had gone to cover the fighting. This took place during an Israeli air raid aimed at cutting lines of communication and destroying bridges.

“We are very alarmed by the sudden attack on the New TV crew and we call on the authorities to protect journalists,” Reporters Without Borders said. “It is unacceptable that journalists should be treated as combatants when they are covering clashes. We point out that this would not be the first time the Israeli army has deliberately targeted journalists.”

New TV said: “The three journalists did not hear the helicopter arrive and do not remember what happened after the shots were fired, recovering consciousness in hospital. They lives are not in danger. They were taken to Natatiye hospital 70 km southeast of Beirut.” The station added that their vehicle was clearly marked with the New TV logo.

Israel also targeted Hizbullah's powerbase in Beirut's southern suburbs and struck factories, roads and bridges in air strikes in the eastern Baalbeck region, killing one person.

Streams of people, many waving white flags, are making a desperate trek from southern Lebanon after Israel ordered them to leave their homes.

Five civilians, including a photographer, were killed in Israeli attacks, raising the total number of people killed in Lebanon since the start of the conflict to 357, according to police and medics.

Three were killed when Israeli aircraft bombarded the region around southern port city of Tyre and one was killed in an air strike on a factory near the eastern town of Baalbeck, police said. The 23-year-old journalist was killed in a raid on the southern village of Qana.

8. I wish I could find the post I read the other day
that stated that Israel doesn't allow images of dead people to be broadcast on tv.
I'd like to know if this is true or not.
