Former Ga. Congressman Sues NYC Mayor
Former Georgia Congressman Sues N.Y. Mayor Bloomberg on Behalf of Gun Dealer
By GREG BLUESTEIN

MARIETTA, Ga. Jul 20, 2006 (AP)— Former U.S. Rep. Bob Barr filed a lawsuit against New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Thursday, claiming Bloomberg's attempt to crack down on gun dealers was "careless, willful and clearly illegal."

The lawsuit, filed in Cobb County Superior Court, is in response to a federal lawsuit filed by Bloomberg in May alleging that 15 firearm brokers in five states, including Georgia, were "rogue gun dealers."

Bloomberg's chief spokesman, Stu Loeser, dismissed the suit as a "public relations stunt."

Bloomberg recently went to Georgia and discussed gun control with the mayor of Atlanta, who is part of his coalition of mayors against gun violence.

5. I'm not exactly sure what Bloomberg's suit in intended to do on a
Fed. level, but in this whole gun issue, I happen to think Howard Dean has the right idea. Gul laws should not be Federal, but local! There's a big difference between having guns in NYC v/s Butte, Mt!

There's no way the restrictions should be the same for a rural area of any State as they are in a Large City!

6. No gun laws should not just be local
Gun manufacturers knowingly dump guns in states with lax gun laws, with the expectation that they make their way through the black market to larger cities. Manufacturers and dealers know this and are complicit, which is what Bloomberg's lawsuit is about. We do need federal gun laws to prevent this shit.

7. I doubt that Dean meant there should be NO federal gun laws.
Just that the States should have a large amount of leeway in judging what is right for themselves in this matter. I believe Dean supports the Brady Bill and other measures to keep automatic weapons off the streets but not the concept of banning rifles in rural Alabama if the voters there want them.

9. Automatic weapons are very tightly controlled by Federal law...

Automatic weapons have been very tightly controlled by Federal law since 1934, specifically the Title 2/Class III provisions of the National Firearms Act. Everyone I know of, including both Dean and the NRA, supports that law, which is not at all controversial.
