Spitzer will run for Gov
November 24, 2003 -- STATE Attorney General Eliot Spitzer will announce he's running for governor right after next year's presidential election - and he expects Rudy Giuliani to be his opponent, a source close to Spitzer told The Post yesterday.
"He has concluded that the nomination is going to be his," said the well-placed, highly knowledgeable source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"Eliot has concluded that Andrew has faded, that Tom Suozzi will make an excellent candidate some day - in the future - and that Chuck Schumer is probably going to stay where he is," said the source, who is familiar with Spitzer's political planning.

"So it's probably Eliot versus Giuliani, although who knows what Giuliani will do in the end?" said the source, who said Spitzer's timetable calls for an announcement "right after next year's election."

3. He's the most effective democrat in the US right now
I almost hate to see him leave his current post as NY AG, but I'm sure he could do even more as Governor.

9. Giuliani..............
along with his "hero" status in NYC, carries an enormous ammount of baggage with him as well. Spitzer will have to counter the mythical status of Giuliani, and it won't be easy. It's going to take a shrewd and polished campaign. It'll be an interesting race, but I hope Spitzer prevails. My ex-state needs a Democratic Governor again, Pataki was a disaster.

13. Excellent News - Question for NY'ers
Wasn't Giuliani not very well liked towards the end of his term as Mayor, but then 9/11 happened and elevated him into positive poll numbers?

16. More Spitzer news
New York's Spitzer becoming a political hot property

By MARC HUMBERT
AP Political Writer

November 25, 2003, 1:56 PM EST

ALBANY, N.Y. -- New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer has been going back and forth to Washington lately to testify before Congress about wrongdoing on Wall Street, traveling a path that could lead straight to the governorship in 2006.

The Democrat has made no secret of his desire to be governor of New York. And his attacks on unethical trading practices, self-dealing and conflicts of interest in the financial world have produced big headlines and favorable coverage.

"Eliot Spitzer's path-breaking work on behalf of investors has positioned him perfectly for higher office," said Howard Wolfson, a top Democratic operative and a key player in Hillary Rodham Clinton's Senate victory in New York three years ago. "No politician in America has done more to hold Wall Street accountable."

The 44-year-old Harvard Law graduate has stopped just short of saying he is in the race. But in nearly every other respect, he appears to be running. (snip/...)
