Supreme Court to end term with two rulings
Supreme Court to end term with two rulings
10 minutes ago

~snip~
At the end of Wednesday's session, Chief Justice John Roberts announced that the high court would finish its work on Thursday.

In the two remaining cases, the justices will decide:

_Whether President Bush overstepped his authority with military war-crimes trials for foreigners held at the U.S. prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

_Whether to strike down Arizona's insanity defense law, in an appeal brought on behalf of a schizophrenic teenager who killed a police officer.

1. Care to place a bet on which way they'll come down?
I wouldn't, but I don't gamble.

Not that it's really a gamble, but it's the principle of the thing.

2. I wanna play SCOTUS
Did Bush overstep his authority? Oh hell no, how could anyone have ever thought such a thing?

Stike down insanity defense law? Most certainly. Dumb law to begin with. Kill them all and let gawd sort 'em out.

Did I win? Did I win?

10. Nope.
I'm not a lawyer, but my quick reading of the precis for each case is that * overstepped his authority, and that the insanity law stands.

New procedures (or whatever) for Hamdan; and the kid received due process.

11. I heard!!
That's great news on the Guantanamo case.

I really don't know about the other one, I was actually just being flip there. I think the defense was hoping the insanity law would be found unconstitutional - the law thrown out. I took it to the extreme - no insanity defense at all which I knew wouldn't happen. As to the facts of the case, etc., I've honestly got no clue and I'm too sick today to dig into the case to form an opinion.
