NYT: Behind Bush's Fury, a Vow Made in 2001
Behind Bush's Fury, a Vow Made in 2001
By SCOTT SHANE
Published: June 29, 2006

WASHINGTON, June 28 — Ever since President Bush vowed days after the Sept. 11 attacks to "follow the money as a trail to the terrorists," the government has made no secret of its efforts to hunt down the bank accounts of Al Qaeda and its allies.

But that fact has not muted the fury of Mr. Bush, his top aides and many members of Congress at the decision last week by The New York Times and other newspapers to disclose a centerpiece of that hunt: the Treasury Department's search for clues in a vast database of financial transactions maintained by a Belgium-based banking consortium known as Swift.

Speaking at a fund-raising event in St. Louis for Senator Jim Talent, Mr. Bush made the news reports his central theme.

"This program has been a vital tool in the war on terror," Mr. Bush said. "Last week the details of this program appeared in the press."

Mr. Bush received a prolonged, standing ovation from the Republican crowd when he added, "There can be no excuse for anyone entrusted with vital intelligence to leak it — and no excuse for any newspaper to print it."...

52. This is all Rove's smokescreen to cover data mining from our phone
calls and emails w/out the judicial check and balance of a warrant.

We know how these Reich Wingers deal w/ political dissent.

Don't get smokescreened! Focus on warrantless secret police spying on US citizen phone calls and emails!

The only "fury" boosh* can muster is when they forget to bring his favorite pilly on AF1. Rough tough creampuff.

If the NYT hadn't already compromised themselves by helping to cheerlead boosh's* war, a simple "Kiss my ass" would suffice as their only comment.

Frist has said it doesn't warrant investigation, but all the while he says the people need to speak out against this outrage. He represents those people but is going to do nothing legislatively. An investigation might be a bit dicey for the prez.

The ones that didn't have any weapons, explosives, training or money but were CERTAINLY mere moments away from blowing up the Sears Tower in Chicago? :eyes: Boosh stopped them dead in their tracks, and not a moment to soon! They were mere minutes away from shopping at a fireworks store when apprehended. Just think, if they had been allowed to buy the "giant economy pack" of Black Cat firecrackers Chicago would be nothing but rubble right now!

When we were expecting a few years back my favorite boy's name was "Guthrie," after Woody. The only problem was that we already had a dog named Arloe. (The 'e' denoted that she was a girl.) In the end we had a daughter, so -- as Jesse Jackson might say -- the question was moot.

especially since midterm elections are coming up. They have to throw some red-meat to their CONservative base to get them fired up and into the polling places in November. What better way than chastising the "librul media"? This is SOOOOO transparent to any THINKING person, which of course excludes any Boosh supporters. Thinking isn't their strong suit. So this WILL work to get his brain-dead base excited, they're too stoopid to realize they're being manipulated. Again.

15. Follow the money!
I wonder where the path paved with oil money would lead if we could follow it. From the blue-collar joe filling up at the station to the oil company, to the MidEast for the crude, to the oil sheiks that control the system, back to the US in the form of political favors and bond purchases to keap the Treasury afloat...

Now I find it awfully interesting that the Bush family is up to its eyeballs in oil money, they are close friends and buddies with a family of oil sheiks called "Bin Laden", and the oil sheiks are making money hand over fist because of the oil price spike due to the ongoing conflict in Iraq , which is financed by the sheiks loaning the money to the US government (with interest, of course), which justifies deficit spending because "we're fighing a global war on terror" AND allows tax cuts for the super-rich, who plow that money back into political favors and re-election campaigns to keep their pet legislators on a leash, who don't threaten the cash cow by actually investigating the Bush family.

Holy shit, I just reread what I wrote. No wonder Bush doesn't want to call attention to forensic accounting! The path leads back to him!

I for one, am very happy that the Office of the Unitary President now has the power to trace financial transactions...and I'm just waiting for the day...when we get to elect a no bullshit Democratic President (who isn't held hostage to private interests or religious nut bags) and can investigate all the bullshit that has gone on in the last 5years; then, we can finally nail these fuckers to the wall and make them pay for what they have done.

Follow the money indeed--all they way back to the Bush/BinLaden oil deals and why ole Georgie's boys fucked their pal BinLaden over.

*oh and just to add, maybe we should investigate all the press whores to find out just who and how much they got paid, for 'servicing' the powerful.

19. Ask Judy Miller about following the money.
The untold story about Ms. Miller. Who exactly tipped her off that two charities were about to be raided shortly after septembertheeleventh? Patrick Fitzgerald would like to know. Why exactly did she and her cohort call the charities and tell them. To get their reaction? I don't think so. Remember, she is a player, not a reporter.

25. They never followed the money- Bush fury equals big lie.
They never followed the trail of put options placed on the corporations adversely affected by 911. This money trail would have led directly to the persons who had advance knowledge of the attacks. Why aren't corporate executives from Deutschebank AB subpoenaed and questioned under oath about this activity? Why aren't the account holders identified and subpoenaed?

Nor did they follow and publicize the financing of the alleged 911 terrorists that came directly from figures in the Pakistani and Saudi governments.

It is amazing that they get away with this posturing about their phony war on terror. They ARE the terrorists.

33. which vow made in 2001?
Mid-July 2001: John O’Neill Rails Against White House and Saudi Obstructionism

FBI counterterrorism expert John O’Neill privately discusses White House obstruction in his bin Laden investigation. O’Neill says, “The main obstacles to investigate Islamic terrorism were US oil corporate interests and the role played by Saudi Arabia in it.” He adds, “All the answers, everything needed to dismantle Osama bin Laden’s organization, can be found in Saudi Arabia.” O’Neill also believes the White House is obstructing his investigation of bin Laden because they are still keeping the idea of a pipeline deal with the Taliban open (see July 21, 2001).

The director of national intelligence, John D. Negroponte, has ordered an assessment of any damage to counter terrorism efforts from the disclosures, but the review is expected to take months, and its findings are likely to remain classified.

Assessment of damage to counter terrorism efforts, eh? Just like they did when Plame was exposed right? What damage was assessed then? Do we know how many agents were compromised or 'offed'.

49. No, we don't know.
Some people believe they know. They don't. They know nothing.

The assessment was probably done. The results are known to those who have classification to know. The same will occur with the SWIFT-monitoring scheme. If the info is released, it'll be to serve either the CIA's or their bosses' interests, not ours.

When the CIA determines how many people were compromised, they base their assessment on agency-internal information. To release that number is to release additional information. Let's say 45 people were compromised; does the group that was monitored know there were 45? If not, you've told them to dig deeper to find additional agents.

45. Clues here
It seems to me that the most important clues have appeared here in the replies to this item.

If the wiretaps that have been done for so many years why can't they find the terra suspects?

If the tracking of banking records has been done for so many years why can't they find the money trail?

Perhaps tracking Americans is the wrong place to look.

Go back to BCCI in which both Bush and Bin Laden were involved. Perhaps it is sour grapes.

Go back to his oil company failure when the Arabs bailed him out. Perhaps Bush is looking for better investment opportunities.

If so many people in the common public can figure this all out why can't the person sitting in the oval office?
