Bush says global warming 'serious problem'

WASHINGTON, June 26 (UPI) -- U.S. President George W. Bush, asked if he thinks global warming is a significant threat to the Earth, says he believes climate change is a serious problem.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Bush said, "There's a debate over whether (global warming) is manmade or naturally caused. We ought to get beyond that debate and start implementing the technologies necessary to enable us to achieve a couple of big objectives -- one, be good stewards of the environment; two, become less dependent on foreign sources of oil for economic reasons and for national security reasons."

Bush his administration wants the next generation to be able to drive cars not fueled by hydrogen. He also called for development of safe nuclear power.

"The truth of the matter is, if this country wants to get rid of its greenhouse gases we've got to have the nuclear power industry be vibrant and viable," said Bush. "And so I believe ... I've got a plan to be able to deal with greenhouse gases."

13. I have less problem with nuclear than fossil fuel.
In terms of prioritizing problems, subbing nuclear energy for fossil fuel until we transition to something better is workable.

27. Nope.
There are far too many problems associated with nuclear; you know all of them so I'm not going to list them here.

Solar and wind (which are actually the same thing, since the sun creates the wind) are advanced enough now to be very viable options to fossil fuels. And if we had invested the amount of money poured into nuclear energy into solar instead, we'd most probably be free of fossil fuels now.

5. Yeah, it's a problem and Bush can look in the mirror to see the cause
All of a sudden this Johnny Come Lately President realizes global warming is a serious issue. Talk to your oil buddies and refinery buddies, Bush. Talk to the hyper wealthy industrialists who are getting a free ride at the expense of the environment.

Geez, if Bush got a clue it would be too late for him to do anything with it.

41. Misstated... point was.... "just gonna wait for hydrogen cars"
The purpose of Bush's push for hydrogen fuel cell as the answer is simply to buy the oil company's another decade of control. We could be moving off oil today, but focusing federal dollars on fuel cells will starve hybrids and alternative fuels of critical startup funding -- allowing oil to remain at crisis (and maximum profits) for the foreseeable future.

"Bush wants..."

And, last I heard, he was pushing hydrogen-fueled cars. So, now he wants them not fueled...? Good grief! :eyes:
