4 Marines killed during operations in Iraq
Associated Press

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The U.S. military announced Thursday that four Marines were killed
during operations in insurgent-ridden Anbar province, three of them in a roadside
bombing.

The military statement said three Marines assigned to Regimental Combat Team 5 "died
after their vehicle hit an improvised explosive device." It said the fourth Marine,
assigned to 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, "died after being attacked while conducting
security operations."

At least 2,511 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq
war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. The figure includes seven
military civilians.

1. Why are they counting the deaths of civilian military contractors...
in the official count?

"The figure includes seven military civilians."

These folks are nothing but hired mercenaries.

20. Could be corps of engineers
Lots of civilians who aren't mercenaries attached to the military. And probably more mercenaries in the service of the shadow government (Halliburton, Bechtel et al.)

5. Four more for the new pile

Grass Bush

Pile the bodies high in Austerlitz and Waterloo Iraq
Shovel them under and let me work--
I am the grass; bush; I cover all.

And pile them high in Gettyburg Baghdad
And pile them high in Ypres and Vedum Mossoul and Al Fallaujah

Two years, ten years, and passengers ask the conductor:
What place is this?

I am the grass bush.
Let me work.

6. Damn. Damn. Damn. Damn. Damn.
Okay, it's time for the magic three-word talking points that we need.

First off, Bush's strategy is no longer 'stay the course', if it ever was. Now it's 'stay and pray'.

Second, deflect 'cut and run' with either 'over the horizon' or 'end the occupation'.

Remember, Democrats do know how to win wars. Woodrow Wilson in the First World War went full-tilt into the war with as many troops as he could muster, and that effort won the war for the Allies in a year.

Franklin Roosevelt did a little thing called the World War Two, in which an econmically-ravaged America turned into the biggest manufacturing plant in the world, fighting a far-ranging was across two oceans against two major military and economic powers. We won both the war and the peace in both of those conflicts.

Harry Truman performed the closing act on WW2, then proceded to Korea 5 years later. Truman went full-throttle in that war also. He pulled victory from the jaws of defeat when the Marines landed behind North Korean lines, freeing up the troops trapped around Pusan and eventually pushing so far north as to nearly be in China. Truman left office in 1952, so it was Republican Dwight D. Eisenhowser who closed out the Korean War with a cease-fire.

Kennedy and Johnson were in Vietnam, and they were not running from the fight. Gulf of Tonkin misdirection nonwithstanding, neither Democrat was running from the fighting. More troops and hardware entered the theatre of operations as the conflict escaladed. While this may not have been, in hindsight, a good idea, LBJ didn't promise to not have a draft and instead hire mercenaries at five times the price to supplement the Army and Marines. Nixon the Republican was the one that pulled out of Vietnam with the war still unresolved.

Clinton, with NATO help, seemed to do a decent job in the former Yugoslovia. Multinational support, plenty of air power, and all that good stuff.

In 1991, Bush the daddy and Cheney the SecDef defeated Iraq in 4 days. And Cheney advised not taking Baghdad and occupying the country, because the cost would be enormous in terms of money, life, and resources. Cheney felt that the Iraqi people wouldn't tolerate foreign occupiers and an insurgency would arise.

Funny how things change, eh?

Also funny how nobody can never anticipate anything either, huh? I guess Cheney just 'forgot' what he said in 1991. And that fictional Hurricane Pam drill back in 2004 wasn't any kind of clue at all.

The more KIA the more "we" have to stay the course. You wouldn't want those soldiers to die in vain would you? :sarcasm:

10. Smile Smile Smile, by Wilfred Owen
Head to limp head, the sunk-eyed wounded scanned
Yesterday's Mail; the casualties (typed small)
And (large) Vast Booty from our Latest Haul.
Also, they read of Cheap Homes, not yet planned;
For, said the paper, "When this war is done
The men's first instinct will be making homes.
Meanwhile their foremost need is aerodromes,
It being certain war has just begun.
Peace would do wrong to our undying dead, -
The sons we offered might regret they died
If we got nothing lasting in their stead.
We must be solidly indemnified.
Though all be worthy Victory which all bought,
We rulers sitting in this ancient spot
Would wrong our very selves if we forgot
The greatest glory will be theirs who fought,
Who kept this nation in integrity."
Nation? - The half-limbed readers did not chafe
But smiled at one another curiously
Like secret men who know their secret safe.
This is the thing they know and never speak,
That England one by one had fled to France
(Not many elsewhere now save under France).
Pictures of these broad smiles appear each week,
And people in whose voice real feeling rings
Say: How they smile! They're happy now, poor things.

21. Rest in pieces more like ...
When will the American public start to blame their incompetent
leadership instead of the people desperately defending their
own homes?

What will it take to get the public to wake up?
