Iraqi army forces arrested a high-level insurgent today who was wanted for running an assassination cell in Baghdad.
The cell was said to have been responsible for kidnapping and killing 14 Iraqi soldiers last month, the US Command said.
It said that Noori Abu Hayder Al-Oqabi was arrested during a raid in the predominantly Shiite district of Kazimiyah, in northern Baghdad. “Noori is the leader of an assassination cell in Baghdad,” an announcement said.
“Noori and his followers are responsible for kidnapping, torturing and murdering innocent Iraqis in four separate Baghdad districts including the kidnapping and murder of 14 Iraqi Army soldiers this past May.”
The announcement said the raid was part of a security crackdown known as “Forward Together” that was recently launched in Baghdad. It provided no other details.
