Publisher's Death an Apparent Suicide
Publisher's Death an Apparent Suicide

By Eric Rich
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, June 20, 2006; 9:42 PM

Philip Merrill, the publisher and former diplomat whose body was found floating
in the Chesapeake Bay Monday after a 10-day search, apparently took his own life,
his family said tonight.

Merrill, 72, the leader of a publishing empire that includes Washingtonian magazine
and the Capital newspaper, underwent heart surgery a year ago and was on several
medications as a result, the family said. He had lately become fatigued and
unmotivated, they said.
<snip>
The development was a startling revelation in a series of events that has gripped the
region since his disappearance June 10, when his boat was found, under sail but empty,
drifting in strong winds. A recreational boater found his body more than 11 miles away
on Monday, close to a shipping lane off Poplar Island.

1. Are you looking for a tear from me?
Adios Merrill. Listen to the demons chuckle and yell, as Mr. Philip enters hell.

...it's time to leave. We can honor his death without lauding his life.

8. Do the folks in Houston still talk about the Baxter watchamacallit?
If Cliff were here with us today, who knows who else besides Kenny Boy and Skilling would be awaiting sentencing.

6. I know what you mean. Ask any EMT or rescue diver who works
a coastal area.

I have been there.

But I still eat crabs.

7. Suicide, or "Suicided?". Methinks There May be More to this Story
The FCC is about to make new media ownership rules, which will no doubt
usher in another big round of media consolidation (as well as cause the
media to make extra nice for the Repubs this election).

I think somebody made Mr. Merrill an offer he couldn't refuse.
Now he sleeps with the fishes.

9. Sounds very Robert Maxwell-ish
Edited on Tue Jun-20-06 11:23 PM by notadmblnd
he was another media mogul who was found floating in water after taking a boating trip years ago. He was in trouble financially and was apparently putting the squeeze on a certain nation to cough up cash to save his business. Apparently he had outlived his usefulness to this certain nation and shortly after he was found floating off the coast of Greece.

16. yeah, I thought the same thing...
I suppose it could be done, but typically, would someone really tie an anchor to their feet and then shoot themselves in the head, and hope you fall overboard into the water?

17. of course, it could never happen
That the sad, pathetic life of a Republican end in suicide.

Their values lead to such self-fulfillment and satisfaction, you know.
