Tension Builds Between L.A. Mayor, Angelides: No endorsement for gov.
LAT: Tension Builds Between L.A. Mayor, Angelides
Villaraigosa declines to endorse the candidate, who's refused to back takeover of school district.
By Michael Finnegan, Times Staff Writer
June 17, 2006

Tension between Antonio Villaraigosa and Democratic gubernatorial nominee Phil Angelides surfaced Friday as the Los Angeles mayor declined to say whether he backed his own party's candidate to unseat Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger....

***

Minutes after Villaraigosa's tepid remarks on his candidacy, Angelides refused to take a stand on Villaraigosa's plan to take over the Los Angeles public schools.

The dual snubs were part of a broad conflict between the two Democrats.

Villaraigosa is torn between party loyalty and the potential rewards offered by his new alliance with the Republican governor. He plans to campaign with Schwarzenegger for bond measures on the November ballot that could offer Los Angeles billions of dollars for schools, housing and traffic relief. And the governor would decide where much of that bounty went.

There is also a matter of personal ambition: Villaraigosa is widely seen as a top Democratic candidate for governor in 2010 — provided that Angelides loses....

4. I don't like non-team players
"Villaraigosa is widely seen as a top Democratic candidate for governor in 2010"

That's what he thinks. We remember stuff like this.

5. yup, Westly endorsed Arnold in the recall
and look how that turned out for him.

i'm really hoping this is a case of media whores trying to divide the dems with misleading people. but Dems have a history of getting into this crap which always hurts us in the GE.

6.  Villaraigosa is making a huge mistake if he backs
Schwarzenegger. His planned school takeover is megalomaniac enough -- and I was a big supporter of him on other grounds. Schwarzenegger is playing it cool for the moment. The minute he is re-elected, he will turn into the big, fat, flabby, aelfish, mean Republican that he really is. Villaraigosa would be a fool to fall for the Schwarzenegger re-election ruse.

7. this mayor
is a fucking idiot. Does he really think after the election a Repubican will help him? Give me a break! Never underestimate the power of Democrats to eat their own! so much for being a progressive. The mayor sounds more concerned with his own future employment than the well being of the state. Not too surprising I guess...

9. With the destruction of the . . .
. . . South Central Farm, and his unwillingness to really support saving it, Villaraigosa has likely lost the Latino vote for any future elections. Not a good thing in a state where Latinos make up about a third of the population.

What is he doing:spank: - the mayor honestly believes nobody is going to remember this? Antonio should call on Joementum immediately to see if Democrats remember stuff like this...
