Rice: No Guarantees on Iraq, Afghanistan

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Wednesday that the U.S. military interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan do not assure those countries will become successful democracies. But she said the chance for success is worth the price.

Speaking to a largely conservative audience of more than 12,000 Southern Baptists, Rice said she knows optimism can hard to sustain in the face of daily sectarian carnage and beheadings in Iraq.

...

She got repeated standing ovations for her call for continued U.S. engagement across the globe.

"We're standing together with people everywhere who desire these fundamental freedoms," especially in Afghanistan and Iraq, Rice said in a speech to the annual Southern Baptist Convention.

In those two countries alone, "We have given more than 55 million people an opportunity to flourish in freedom," Rice said. "Not a guarantee of success, but a chance."

2. No chance
because of how we went about it. A higher chance that Rice will stand trial for war crimes.

3. These comments seem to colide with Bush who says we will stay in
Iraq as long as it takes until we are successful.
Damn, this shows they still are clueless.

6. Agreed. What has she sacrificed.....zero. Get all the families
of the dead soldiers together and see if they would agree that it's "worth it". Stupid bitch.

8. Unfortunately
There are some families that would agree that it's worth it, because to believe otherwise would cause them to question everything that they believe in.

Even a good portion of the wounded still believe the crap about "freedom and democracy", so she's playing to the right audience.

10. They should contribute their own sons and daughters. The
upper- and middle-classes have no skin in the game yet and, without a draft, don't have to weigh the cost-benefit ratio honestly.

7. Condoleeza Rice is the political equivalent of whipped cream.
A swirling pile of questionable chemicals with absolutely no nutritional value. It looks impressive but t's not very good for you.

9. Why not ask them for money then?
So far this was has cost us about $300 billion, which equates to around $1000/person, or about $2000 per taxpayer.

If these asswipes value freedom so highly, let them put their money where their mouths are.

I propose a 'flat tax' of $2000 per person to pay for the cost of the war.

No sacrifice is too great to spread freedom around the world I say.

I'm sure the Baptists would heartily agree.

12. 1964: The SBC opposed the Civil Rights Act
They also bar women from preaching the gospel and oppose affirmitive action, which Rice has benefited from and defended throughout her career.

Given the SBC's equally condescending views of single career women and pro-choicers (like Rice), there is definitely a certain amount of hypocrisy of both Rice and the SBC to be cheering one another on.

I find it incredibly bizarre that Rice was selected to woo an audience that pretty much hates what she represents. I find it equally bizarre that Rice would WANT to address them.
