Bush Approval Rating Shows Modest Improvement
Latest approval rating at 36%

PRINCETON, NJ -- The latest USA Today/Gallup update on George W. Bush's presidential job approval rating finds 36% of Americans approving of the job Bush is doing, while 57% disapprove. This represents a modest improvement in that measure from recent weeks, a finding mirrored in several other national surveys.

In early May, just 31% approved of Bush, marking the low point of his administration to date. A subsequent poll in May found a 33% rating for Bush. The current rating of 36% is in line with Bush's public standing in March and April.

While it is difficult to pinpoint a precise reason for Bush's improved rating, several events in recent weeks may have had an impact: Gas prices have stabilized (though they remain high), Bush's nomination of Henry Paulson as Secretary of the Treasury has been well-received, Bush addressed the nation regarding immigration, and he admitted some mistakes in his prior statements on the wars in Iraq and against Osama bin Laden.

The June 1-4 poll shows about a 10 percentage-point increase in Bush's approval rating among Republicans, from 69% in the two May polls to 78% in the current poll. Independents' (25% in May, 28% currently) and Democrats' (8% at both times) ratings of Bush have held steady, so the modest improvement in recent weeks is mostly due to more positive evaluations from Bush's own partisans

6. He's whoring for popularity. One's life may be shit, but if the leader
can deflect real problems by saying gays are worthless, whatever.

4. He's been around 35-37% for months in most polls.
I think that 31% is more of an out lier than this is a bump in his ratings.

7. Bush supporters, once again showing they have the lowest I.Q.s of
any voting block, demonstrate their tremendous capacities for selective memory. "What port deal? What immigration reform? We get to hate the gays again!"

8. Well there hasn't been a Repub indictment for weeks
His supporters are either "true believers" i.e. non-thinkers, grossly misinformed, or willfully ignorant.

There is some sway back and forth with the latter categories. Easy to see why the short memory thing would affect their position.

10. unfortunately these individuals make up a relatively stable third of the
electorate - and a majority in times of crisis or war. This is why Fox News is the most watched cable news outfit. "No one....has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people." H.L. Mencken

12. I agree, one-third is basically unredeemable
(Irony intended)

Fortunately, the Neocons/Rethuglicans are screwing up big time here. They are trotting out the wedge issues so fast and furiously, without regard for the minimal mental capacity of their constituents, that a lot of confusion is afoot.

I'm hoping they'll be confused (not to mentioned USED) enough to stay home and thump their bibles on election day.

9. The Dems handed Bush and the Republicans a series victories
on a silver platter. What else would anyone expect?

Hayden- confirmed, illegal NSA spying issues punted.

Kavanaugh- unqulaified political hack confirmed to the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit. Chance to stand up to Bush and the far right and look like serious leaders- punted.

Kempthorpe- confirmed, despite a dismal environmental record during his six years in the U.S. Senate in the 1990s, scoring a "0" on the League of Conservation Voters legislative scorecards for every year except 1993, when he scored a 6 percent rating on the basis of one minor vote.

MORE WINNING ISSUES punted.

Sorry folks, but this is not a winning formula going into the fall elections.

22. Not only that - but, unfortunately, I think the Bolten is much smarter
with the phony PR moves than Andy Card. I can tell the difference since Card left. Don't forget he rued Abu Ghairab (sp?) Card would have NEVER let him do that.

Man, it's so depressing. Do we have to have two scandals break per day to get rid of this IDIOT?

19. 36%...wow! What a popular guy! Could be Class President any day now!
Oh wait...he already is..."his Base" is a Class, isn't it. The one's he's always cutting taxes for. Why he IS already "Class President."

That explains the 36%...ncluding some flattering 'padding' of 'numbers.'

20. I would not place too much stock in a Gallup poll. For the last
10-20 years, Gallup's polls have had a decidedly Repuke tilt, consistently scoring Repukes at 5-10% higher than other, equally reputable polls.

If the next Harris poll shows * above 35%, I'll eat my hat. Remember that last Harris poll was the first (and only, to my knowlege) to put * below 30% (at 29%).

....keep them homos and uppity women in their place - as second-class citizens...that must be why his ratings have improved.
