Officials admit doubts over chemical plot (UK)
Intelligence behind terror raid questioned as proof remains elusive

Richard Norton-Taylor and Vikram Dodd
Monday June 5, 2006
The Guardian

Counter-terrorism officials conceded yesterday that lethal chemical devices they feared had been stored at an east London house raided on Friday may never have existed.

Confidence among officials appeared to be waning as searches at the address continued to yield no evidence of a plot for an attack with cyanide or other chemicals. A man was shot during the raid, adding to pressure on the authorities for answers about the accuracy of the intelligence that led them to send 250 officers to storm the man's family home at dawn ...

1. Another mistaken shooting?
This would be a very bad development for Tiny Blur.

4. Oh this shooting was a vast improvement at least.
And I say that as a heavy critic of the shooting of that poor Brazilian. This shooting was under sane rules and the police officers on the scene, well, they seem to have acted in accordance with what they honestly believed was correct. Now if the intel was wrong, that's very unfortunate. But at least this is more in line with legitimate police work.

9. There is an old saying, I can't help repeat in black humor
Once might be a mistake, but after that it starts to look like carelessness.

10. This shooting wasn't so very different.
They shot a pyjama-clad man without any warning at all.

False information, wrong address, and the shooting of a clearly unarmed man without provocation
or warning.

Sounds depressingly familiar.

11. I have no idea that he was clearly unarmed, speaking for myself, but
They DID shoot for a location on the body, not at the head, and they didn't get close and shoot him more times in the head to make sure he was dead.

We can dispute whether that's "very" different, but it's something.

13. No shit they shot him Kagemusha
Just a bunch of trigger happy careless pigs, really how many times does police in the UK actually get to shoot someone?

I doubt they are properly trained on when to shoot or not to shoot simply because they don't have much experience or IF ANY.

15. When a man comes downstairs in the night in his pajamas,
there's not many places he can hide a gun.

If he was armed and intending to defend himself, I think he'd stay upstairs and take a shot from
there, not stumble downstairs right into their arms (so to speak).

5. God forbid anyone should simply do his/her job so well that it becomes
accomplished without murdering anyone. That's simply way too much a hassle. After all, no one's perfeck!

Also, a botched job always serves as a new warning to anyone who doesn't seek to suck up well enough to stay in your good graces.

8. Trained in Israel
This is what happens when you give police military training by the Israeli "shoot to kill" squads. Everyone becomes a Palestinian.

17. Well
let's see how this unravels...

My instincts told me this was a distraction - just like Operation Swarmer - lots of headline-grabbing action but very little substance underneath.

My guess is that it was to help Prescott out, give him a bit of gravitas during a crisis whilst he was Acting Prime Minister.
