McCain addresses mayors' meeting: Senator refuses to pass judgment on Reid
Wow, what a martyr marketing ploy, so clever of the GOP. Damn, Reid for even letting his ass crack show for a tenth of a second. The GOP wolves are desperate and we all know it and we know they control the media whores.
June 4, 2006

Speaking in Las Vegas on Saturday, Sen. John McCain declined to pass judgment on Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid for accepting free seats at a boxing match both attended, but McCain said he felt obligated to pay for his attendance.

While working on federal boxing legislation in 2004, Reid and McCain sat ringside at a Las Vegas fight as guests of the Nevada Athletic Commission, but McCain attempted to pay for his seats, while Reid did not.

Asked whether he thought Reid was wrong to accept the free seat, McCain said, "That's up to Harry." But he said he insists on paying for such events: "I always do because I think that I should reimburse for things that other citizens have to pay for."

McCain, widely seen as a top Republican prospect for the 2008 presidential race, was asked about the boxing controversy after a speech he gave to the U.S. Conference of Mayors, which is holding its annual convention at Paris Las Vegas through Tuesday.

3. I was led to understand that he couldn't pay for the seat!

TPM Muckraker further confirmed that it would be illegal for Reid to reimburse the NAC for the credential, according to Keith Kizer, NAC executive director:

"It would be illegal," Kizer said, explaining that it fell under a state law prohibiting agencies or individuals for charging access to government property. The credentials provide access to the commission's area near the ring. "It would be like charging someone for access to a senator's office," Kizer added with no apparent sense of irony.

He went on to explain that credentials are given out to governmental officials and others in order to observe the commission's activity. Sometimes the credentials are provided in addition to tickets -- sometimes officials sit in the commission's area.

Reid's office, meanwhile, confirmed that Reid received a credential, and not a ticket to the bout: "We know it for a fact that he had a credential."

4. The story is they couldn't accept McCain's money.
So McCain's dog and pony show of "paying" for the ticket - which no one else can legally pay for anyway - fooled the media.
