CNN/AP: 55 Utah Guard arrive in Yuma, AZ, for immigration duty
Guard arrives in Yuma for immigration duty
Arizona is now the nation's busiest illegal entry point
Saturday, June 3, 2006

Members of the 116th, 1457th and 489th units of the Utah National Guard board a cargo plane Saturday.

PHOENIX, Arizona (AP) -- Fifty-five National Guard members from Utah arrived in Yuma, Arizona, on Saturday as the first troops to be sent to the Arizona-Mexico border in a plan announced by President George W. Bush to crack down on illegal immigration.

The Utah troops were supposed to work on fences and other projects as part of the Guard's long-standing efforts at the Arizona border, officials had said as late as Wednesday.

But their mission has since been folded into Bush's plan to send up to 6,000 National Guard troops to the four southern border states to help federal immigration agents....

Under the president's plan, troops would perform support duties that would free up federal authorities to focus on border security. They would not perform significant law enforcement duties.

The Utah troops, who will not carry weapons, will be in Yuma for two weeks installing improved lighting at a border crossing site, extending an existing border fence and building a road, McIntire said....

1. Swell
The Guard members who aren't in battle get two weeks of training a year to keep their skills somewhat up-to-date. So what are they going to be doing? Building fences and installing lighting instead of learning how not to get killed when they get sent to Iran. And why? As an inadequate political sop to shithead's xenophobic base.

3. Border States National Guard Units
Why aren't they using the Border States National Guard Units?????

They know the terrain. Costs would be lower due to the Guard members abiltiy to live within their home districts. They would be acclimated to the temperatures. Many of the members speak Spanish.

Whose idea was it to mobilize Guard members from all the States....Rumsfeld????

4. Just curious: Why isn't AZ have it's own Nat'l Guard on its borders?

Seriously...it seems really strange that another state's nat'l guard would be entering into another state to "guard" its boundary...

the cost of incarcerating/deporting illegals that could happen; Maybe Non border states shouldn't get to vote on the issue , after all you expect the border states to enforce national law alone. I say get the GA, AL, SC, national guard out there in Yuma this summer 110+ degrees OR. how about the border states don't have to send anyone overseas?
