JAKARTA, June 1 (Reuters) - Workers in Indonesia culled 1,600 chickens on Thursday in a village where the H5N1 bird flu virus killed a 15-year-old boy this week, and the government said owners who refused to surrender their poultry could be jailed.

1. It has infected 49 Indonesians and killed 36 of them since the start of 20
What a load of crap.

I wonder how many children have perished because of malaria in the same time-frame.

H5N1 is bullshit.

One is at far greater risk from walking down the sidewalk and stepping off the curb.

This whole deal is about a Universal Chicken (which Tyson will be more than glad to furnish).

4. MUTATION is the spark.. current virus not the issue at all
current virus just sets the stage for a mutation which will spread fast, human to human..

like the '18 Spanish flu.

6. What we are overlooking is the effect that 'culling' will have on ..
Edited on Thu Jun-01-06 11:10 PM by TomInTib
the planet.

Just what do you think 'culling' means?
Do you realize what percentage of the Earth's inhabitants depend on poultry?

If there is a Univeral Food, poultry is it.

Just as I would with any influenza outbreak, I will worry about it when it breaks in a legitimate way.

What the heck good does worrying about it now accomplish?

Because if it does happen, it will be in a form that can only be dealt with when it finally shows its face.

Duct tape and plastic?

I am serious. Think about it practically.

5. In its present form, you're right...it's mostly hype. However....
...if it mutates into a strain that's more easily transmissible between humans, it's going to be one scary bug.

There's no cause for hype. There's no reason for panic.

There IS reason to stay informed and be prepared.

Yeah, the "we're all gonna die" stuff is hype, but please don't let that discourage you from keeping informed about the facts and prepared for the possibilities.

8. What "informed and prepared" means to your family is your choice...
Here's what I think is important for my family:

I keep up on the latest international H5N1 bulletins about twice a week.

I've spent some time researching the H5N1 virus, avian influenzas in general, the government's ability to deal with disasters, etc.

After all of that I'm not convinced that H5N1 is the next pandemic, but I understand why some pretty knowledgeable scientists think it might be.

(that's the "informed" part)

Based on what I know, I've:

Bought a few extra cans of canned goods every time I went to the grocery store. It's all stuff we normally eat and I only buy if it's on sale.

Thought about ways to decrease our reliance on commercial utilities.

Made plans if we had to live someplace else for a while.

I'm not panicked. I'm living the same life I always did...I'm just preparing for possibilities.

9. BARE STORE SHELVES are reason to act now, not
as you said "when it breaks".

a thousand cans per person for eighteen months chaos.

the stores will be bare in hours after the news breaks of HH 's beginning.

YOu also will need to get ready for bands of thieves. And no water in the cities.. folks wont go to work. Thus, soon no radio news.. no gas stations... no city water... no cops.. no hospitals.. the few of each which may stumble along, will be in short supply.

to get ready for thieves, and for water disappearing, you will need to do some shopping before "bare shelves"... before the crowd cleans out stores with mad buying.

10. And with "just in time" stocking, shelves will be bare in a few days.
Remember, stores don't keep anything "in the back"...what's on the shelves is what they have.

If deliveries stop, stores will be empty in a few days.

2. H5N1 is the Nuclear Power of diseases...
Actually affects a limited number of people, but if it lived up to its potential, could be disastrous...

3. Oscar comments on weak points of good policy change.. and his own idea
Edited on Thu Jun-01-06 10:27 PM by oscar111
of sealing the americas...

====================================================
MY REACTION ..

The Minister decrees a need to cull, then local government has ten days to do a mass culling. Jail time for those who dont cooperate. Tho i have some disappointment over that ten day idea. Also i dont like local gov doing the real action.. i would like to see high level power doing it. Ideally... the UN's FAO flown in. Too much to hope for there i guess. Theoreticians of birdflu containment are invited to read my own idea also, in the forum National Defense.. "sealing the americas".

Not one person in north or south america has to get sick!
