Buzz around Gore fuels talk of another run for president

>By Holly Yeager in Washington

<snip>
The former vice-president is the subject of a new documentary about global warming that opens on Wednesday. And the buzz he has been generating is fuelling speculation that he may want to return to politics.

A poll released this week by National Journal, a Washington magazine, showed Mr Gore moving into fourth place when Democratic “insiders” were asked who had the best chance of winning the party’s 2008 presidential nomination – up from ninth place in December.

Mr Gore insists he has “no plans” to run again and that he is committed to his campaign to protect the planet.

But for some Democrats he represents a viable alternative to Hillary Clinton, the 2008 frontrunner, who they fear is too polarising a figure to be elected president. With a network of activist supporters and financial backers and an aura of celebrity, he is one of the few politicians who could enter the race late in the game and be able to wage a national campaign.....

10. Gore has been out there telling us how he feels
about this admin. and he has been dead on. The lousy lead up to war, bush's trashing of the environmental laws that were on the books, etc. Gore is a leftie but not far left, just what we need. Finegold, Clark, those are very do-able.

6. He may truly feel that the corruption is so great between
the republicans and the media (not to mention Diebold) that no democrat stands a chance until it all completely unravels, and therefore his commitment to the planet over the party is not only sincere, but much smarter than facing an election that might very well be tainted and compromised.
He and we will know so much more after the November elections.

11. The planet is this party's commitment
We can't stand around again and say we can't win against the repub machinery. Kerry wasn't forceful enough, maybe led poorly by his handlers, Gore got in that game too. Gore appears to get it that you can't play softball and win. Hilliary will lose on the war issue in my opinion.

23. I don't know what poll you're referring to
but if you look at the issues people side with gore over clinton

people are against the war. hillary clinton has sided with bush on the war. that's the #1 issue right now. I think if hillary really has to go up against gore in a primary, her voting record will haunt her. how did she vote on the war, roberts, scalia, .... people are really looking for someone who is anti-bush.

Edited on Sat May-20-06 03:18 PM by MissWaverly
I don't want her to follow GWB's ruinous path, I think we should cool down our posturing
in the Middle East not step it up, I look for her to be aggresive which I do not think
is wise at this time. Also, whatever, a presidential candidate has, she doesn't have it,
she is not at ease with crowds, she looked like some kind of exotic species of bird, bobbing
up and down at Coretta King's funeral. She does not have that warmth that people want to
reach out to. She is intelligent, and I think she has done well as a NY senator but I
do not feel that she has the popular appeal to gain the presidency.

"Does Al Gore want to do it again? Hard as it is to believe, the question is suddenly under serious discussion."

WTF? Why would that be hard to believe? More to the point, how does this kind of editorializing actually get in the paper, and why don't Republicans ever get this treatment?

50. "hard to believe" probably because of the treatment...
... he received the first time around. Why would he want to subject himself and his family to all that, again? He doesn't have to be Prez to effect environmental change; but he *will* need a Democratic Congress (House and/or Senate) and a Democratic President.

38. Al Gore and Theodore Roosevelt IV
Theodore Roosevelt IV is the great grandson of Teddy Roosevelt who was the last Republican to actually conserve anything. His conservative philosophy is responsible for setting first aside large tracts of wilderness and opposing corporate fascism to whom his famous quote "Talk (or walk) softly and carry a big stick" was directed. Gore and T.R.IV have formed an alliance on global warming. Perhaps a sane conservative on the Democratic ticket would give it balance and enough appeal to put the election out of the reach of vote rigging, voter intimidation tactics to be effective. Then the Republicans would be stuck with only the KKK and the top one tenth of one percent of the economic heap who benefit from neocon insanity.

"Mr Gore insists he has “no plans” to run again and that he is committed to his campaign to protect the planet."

As president he can work towards the U.S. conforming with the Kyoto agreement, renewable energy programs, tax breaks for buyers of efficient cars. It's time for real change and I think Gore is one of the few Democrats who can make it happen.
