Strong Quake Off Eastern Indonesia
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) -- A powerful undersea earthquake struck off eastern Indonesia late Friday, a meteorological agency said. There were no immediate reports of injuries, damage or a possible tsunami.

The magnitude 6.1 quake struck at 11:44 p.m. local time (14:44 GMT) and was centered 66 kilometers (38 miles) beneath the Molucca Sea, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its Web site.

It struck 190 kilometers (120 miles) south of Manado, the provincial capital of North Sulawesi.

1. everytime I hear or read the word "earthquake"
I think of an incident while I was in California for business.

I was in S. California with a friend over the weekend before a consulting trip and then drove back to LA for business. When I got to the hotel, there was this fellow there working on the pool...and he said to me...."so miss...did you feel the shakey shakeys?"....it was just really funny to me at the time....

so now I think of earthquakes as the "shakey shakeys"....

2. My CA friends have all kids of words for them.
Rock and roll is one they use all the time. I think they actually have different names for different types. Not having felt one, I find it interesting.

4. I was in bed one night when I felt a small quake
it was really odd...didn't really scare me because it wasn't the "movie type" quake everyone talks about...

I am a native of PA and while there have been quakes in different parts of our state...they were all very minor...

one of my coworkers was in a high rise in LA during a big quake and told me that it shaved years off her life....due in part to how scary it was...

9. I've been in two large earthquakes in my life.
The one that hit Olympia in '49, and the big Good Friday quake in '64. The latter, and I don't care to exaggerate, was fucking insane. I still have nightmares.

3. I felt my first earthquake in memphis.
The earthquake was far away in Arkansas and it only shook us slightly. It was kinda cool. Obviously not so cool if its a strong one and you're near the epicenter of it.

10. My one and only earthquake experience
Oddly enough, my one and only earthquake experience was in New York City.

I woke up in the middle of the night because the heating pipes were rattling and my kitchen utensils were banging around. I thought the basement boiler was about to explode, but when the noise subsided and nothing blew up, I just dropped back off to sleep.

Didn't realize until I read the news in the morning that what I had felt was an earthquake (with an epicenter in Lake Placid, NY).

11. Mine was in Glenside, PA, just NW of Philly
Talking in bed, we heard a loud crashig sound that lasted a few seconds. The ceiling lights swayed, and the china shook in the cabinets downstairs. We thought a train had somehow run into the station. But no... it was only an EARTHQUAKE!
Later we found out that the railroad (across the street from our house) was built on the fault line ( ! ) because it was the most level ground around.
Imagine!

12. Funny how we expect something else

>> We thought a train had somehow run into the station. <<

A friend of mine who lived in upstate New York, MUCH closer to the epicenter, was certain that munitions at the nearby "secret" AFB had exploded or possibly a plane had crashed. I think earthquake was about fourth or fifth in her list of possible causes.

Her neighbor, however, who had lived in California, was out her door in two seconds flat. She immediately recognized the commotion as an earthquake.

And my friend's cat, who had been sleeping on the bed, apparently shot straight up into the air in shock.
