Judge Extends Ky. Grand Jury Investigation

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- A judge said Friday he would extend the term
of a special grand jury that indicted Gov. Ernie Fletcher last week
on misdemeanor charges of illegal hiring practices.

On the day the grand jury's term was due to expire, Franklin County
Circuit Judge William Graham said he would allow it to meet for another
90 days.

The extension follows a Kentucky Supreme Court ruling Thursday that
validated Fletcher's sweeping pardon last summer of anyone in his
administration except himself who might face charges in the probe of alleged
illegal patronage. The court said the grand jury could not indict people already
pardoned by Fletcher.

The attorney general's office, which is prosecuting the Fletcher case, had asked
Graham to extend the grand jury's term prior to that ruling.
